8' diameter Hobbit Door. The timber framer next door always wanted one, and now he had an opportunity to try it. The square frame is 6" C-Channel on the sides and top and 3/8" x 6" flat steel for the bottom. The bottom was tapped and drilled for a bearing mount. The circle is 1/4" x 3" flat steel that I welded to the table in a circle. The bottom flat spot is 4' wide. All of the internal bracing is 1/4" x4" flat steel.The hinge is 1" 1018 cold rolled solid round bar. It opens and closes very smoothly, and did not sag one bit. Even with the wood, 2 fingers will push it open.




The last picture is before I put the solid rod for the hinge in it.
I've got videos opening and closing the door both before and after the cedar boards were installed. Just not sure how to get them on here.

If I could meet and marry a woman into living on the road, and making money doing it, I would have found heaven. It’s really hard to share the enthusiasm for a road trip with someone who thinks road trips are about sleeping until you get there. Shift driving is obviously different and it’s dependent upon shift sleeping but the idea of getting a paid vacation to Six Flags Magic Mountain or something like Disney World or Vegas, it’s really hard to meet up with someone who gets that the hotel is free, the food is free, the vacation is basically free and we got paid for the trip.

That's really cool! Not often you see a round door like that.

 

Working late years ago when still a young young man. Trying to get a drilling rig ready for a job, updating the deck frame. Got my eyes burnt from the flash of the welder on the other side of the rig. I agree totally with what you said, no shiny tin at all if welding is in the equations….

For those that never experienced eyes being burnt from a welder, it’s no fun….!!

I got flashed 3 days in a row welding a ladder up in a cement silo when I was a youngster — I’m pretty sensitive to that sort of thing
