So I have a international 9400 with a cat 6NZ c15 2002 model year. I’m having issues with the ac belt and only the ac belt breaking. For context this truck has two belts a 6 rib and 8 rib. Into the story, last year we replaced the ac compressor twice the original then an after market which locked up. So we replaced it again with another aftermarket compressor, this one is still on the truck ac works perfect. But we keep breaking belts to the point of 15 in a year. The compressor and fan pulley have been straight edged so they are in line the compressor is where it’s supposed to be there’s nothing on the pulleys that’s cutting it. Other then manufacturers defects on the belt what could be the problem?
also the idler has been replaced, the tensioner is a rod with two bolts that doesn’t seem to be the issue the tensioner is part of the compressor mount I believe

    TL;DR
I have broken 15 ac belts with no obvious problems, new compressor, new idler.

How much free travel can you make the belt move at the longest stretch between pulleys?? You may have the belt too tight?

    csw1818 and BoxCarKidd Thank this.

You may have too much refrigerant in the a/c. Even if it’s charged to spec. I fought with my KW’s forever, was putting a compressor a year or so on them and no end of belts when the systems were loaded to 2lb like KW says. My a/c guy started leaving them down an ounce or two. They run fine and I had one compressor go over 5yrs on one belt change. Watch the a/c running with gauges on it, if it’s running insane high-side pressures that might be your problem.

You straight-edged to check alignment with the other pullies but did you also check that they are true and square to the engine block?

    csw1818 Thanks this.

We have tried tight and loose and everywhere in between this most recent one was too loose.

Yes as far as I know the compressor is square to the block

You could be on to something here. Our problem is we aren’t really sure how much it’s supposed to have. The ac is coming out the vents at 53-55 degrees, I’m the driver I’ll ask my boss what he thinks.

You need an a/c guy to look at it. Even if you get the spec from Farmall it may be too much. Gauges on it when it’s running tell the whole tale. Mine were hitting 250 to 270 on the high-side with 2lbs in them, and running 55 to 58deg at 80 ambient. Down 2oz they only go to about 220, and run 48-52deg at 80 ambient. And the compressors last forever. The HVAC guy that does my a/c work thinks the compressors were seeing liquid when they’re over-charged, and either blow the belt off it, or destroy the compressor.

Reason for edit: Missed by 100psi, I’m not the a/c guy.
