Can y’all experienced drivers explain to me the housings on the axles ? Why are some bigger than others? Does the bigger the housing the higher the gear ratio or that doesn’t matter?

I don't think it's about the gear ratio it's about the actual heaviness of the rears themselves.
So for example if you had 46000 lb Rears the housings would be heavier than 40,000 lb Rears.
Don't forget the heavier duty the rears are, the larger the components are inside of them, like the axles bearings EtcAnother Canadian driver Thanks this. -

More weight it can handle. Likely more torque too.
Put a 40k rear next to a 46k rear and its a way beefier housing, bigger bearings, bigger hubs etc. -
Ahh okay so I does not have to do anything with the gear ratio? I thought the bigger the housing the higher the ratio, the Pete we bought has 46k rears, the housing looks big compared to my other Pete.

You can stick just about any ratio into any housing. I had a set of 44k Rockwells with 5.29 rears in it.

10 4, you see my dad thinks the bigger the housing the higher the ratio. Cause most of the Volvo’s have a super small housing that’s why he thinks they have small gear ratio, but I told him that the truck we bought has a big housing but that don’t matter it can still have 3.70s.
