FMCSA--Speed limiters are coming

I say it's about safety, but that's just my own personal opinion. That's from my experience of driving. I'm a professional driver that's more comfortable running in the 65 mph range. I am of the opinion that 18 wheelers going past a certain speed can potentially be dangerous. Now some folks are comfortable rising at high speeds. Where a driver likes to set his cruise doesn't him right or wrong. It just doesn't bother me if they put it in the mandate because I'm already used to running slower speeds, and I still make my miles and money. Now as for the FMCSA saying that these mandates level the playing field. I don't know that it does because the success of the driver, regardless of whether mandates exist or not, is contingent mostly on the driver itself, and on some days having some good fortune. I've worked for megas, and I've worked for companies with mega capabilities. I've worked local, running routes. I've worked 1099 companies with wide open trucks. To me, regardless of the regulation, my success has came down to my use of time. However fast I could drive had nothing to do with the amount of money I made. You can believe me or FMCSA. My views are purely subjective. I also think FMCSA's thinking that this levels the playing field is very subjective.

I did most of what you did and some. I was very comfortable with speeds between 62 mph to 80 mph.
I have a subjective opinion on my personal preferences too.
The issue at hand is the effect of the speed limiters applied to the whole industry.
Positive or Negative? I think it may be an overall negative impact.

 

I can understand why you would think that. I'm inclined to think it would have no impact at all, but that's just me being a glass ½ full kind of guy. I just can't imagine every single truck turned down to 65. I would think that there's going to be an "up to" limit, something like no faster than 75. I can envision some wiggle room here. Honestly, I'd be surprised if the mandate passed. Someone mentioned trucks traveling at slow speeds in the hammer lane. If anything, I could see DOT ramping up that enforcement. I am speaking from imagination though. I see both sides, and a pretty good argument can be made either way.

 

I'm not giving anyone ideas. It what they are after.

 

I knew the trucking era was winding down and slowly becoming an entry level job, but this speed limit if enacted will be the final nail in the coffin.

A 70mph diesel truck vs a 70mph electric truck doesn’t compare, if diesel is inexpensive and if the batteries run down fast on a 70mph electric truck.

If diesel is made expensive, and speed limits capped let’s say at 65mph maybe just maybe electric trucks have a chance. Just a theory. But it does fit well together.
