In terms of practicality, it is hard to argue with your statement. At least for now and the near future.
However, let's not delude ourselves. Electric engines are better from the very engineering concept. Cleaner, less complex, more efficient with the energy input to be converted into kinetics.

"Electric motors convert over 85 percent of electrical energy into mechanical energy, or motion, compared to less than 40 percent for a gas combustion engine."
    Electric Vehicles 101.

The question remains about the battery technology. Had that effort not been thwarted by oil business over 100 years ago, internal combustion engine would have shared the fate of the steam engine long time ago.

Not everyone gets in a truck every day and bangs out 700 miles. Long haul isn’t going to be practical for electric trucks for a while, but given the companies using LNG and CNG it stands to reason that electric would make inroads in local markets first. There are many operations that could see benefits of electric trucks. It will be the same way with autonomous operations. Leave here, go there, and return back to here will be the first types of operations to go driverless.

Because he figured out it will cost him 20k to replace those batteries because they only last 5 to 6 years .

Although with the current fuel prices $50 sounds like quite an attractive daily expense.

If they ever figure out how to produce energy from fusion that will be the end of internal combustion engines. At that point it's just a matter of upgrading the infrastructure everywhere.

Well that's not going to happen overnight of course but reliable, cheap fusion energy will spell the end of relying on fossil fuels for our energy needs. Maybe 10 years if infrastructure is quickly upgraded or 20 on the slow side?

    Lets do the math
Tesla batteries only last 300k miles . The tesla car battery cost around 20 k to replace . And thats a 100kwh battery. Semi tucks are using 600kwh to 1mwh thats 6 to 10 times the cost of 100kwh battery . So at the lower end around $120k to replace the batteries every 3 years + 80 $ a night to fully charge for 300 miles. Thats another 20k each year .
Total cost of operating 300 mile range semi $180k in 3 years + unknown maintenance and very limited repair and tire shops.

The amount of powerline and transformers that would take would put it at 20 years is my bet.
