At the company I work for it seems the vast majority of drivers are in their 50s or older. If there is age discrimination, it can’t be very widespread.

The article says they were falsifying their log books….also says younger drivers had done the same with their log books. I suppose the older drivers were not teaching the you ger drivers how to do it! Naw, that would never happen.

    @Allow Me.
    1)
In reference to driving a car, do you feel that drivers age 65 & older should get their drivers licenses renewed every 2 years, with medical cards?
    2) I have heard people in the past make this suggestion, primarily from younger people in their 30's & 40's.

    NOTE:
    1)
I myself am 65 years old, will be 66 October 1st., (born 1956).
    2) I primarily drive my car to & from work every week, 12+ miles one way, 24+ miles round trip, totaling 120+ miles a week, 6200+ miles a year, plus any errands that I need to run. I do take my car out on the highway to clean out the exhaust & get those pistons revved up, from time to time.
    3) For the most part, I am still healthy, however, I cannot pass a D.O.T. physical.
    4) For the longest time, I wanted to be an OTR truck driver, driving all 48 states, possibly going into Canada. I would have been willing to drive dry vans, reefers, tankers, hoppers, & flatbeds.

    About Myself:
    1)
I have never married, never had children, (actually checked to be sure of this), & have no pets. plant, or fish.
    2) I live in an apartment, have no criminal record, do not smoke or drink, & never used drugs, (not ever having tried them).
    3) I do have a work history, with 2 spells of unemployment, although, I have been steadily working for the last 15 years. I will be retiring at the end of the year, (December 2022). I will be very close to full Social Security retirement age.
    4) SADLY & UNFORTUNATELY, both of my parents, all 4 of my grandparents, along with all 8 of my aunts & uncles, have all passed away. I no longer have eldercare responsibilities.
    Father: 8/30/1921 - 7/2/1981, age 59 - due to acute monocytic leukemia
    Mother: 5/31/1921 - 9/30/2007, age 86 - due to heart disease & diabetes
TRUTH BE TOLD: These deaths are an EERIE feeling, even though it is all part of the cycle of life.

God bless every American and their families! God bless the U.S.A.!

The absolute sheer driving force of our national economy - without truck drivers, our entire national economy would come to an absolute standstill - if not outright be dead.
Over the mountains, through the woods, into the valleys, coast to coast, from sea to shining sea - truck drivers can and do go anywhere and everywhere, every day, every night, all year round.

I don’t think there’s much of this in trucking. I’ve been out here almost 20 years and I’m 62…. If you can pass the medical and have a good mvr. I think almost all companies would want you to fill a seat.

I agree. We do a lot of off road work in the mountains. Drivers that can do that kind of work don 't grow on trees. Our drivers are older and we can count on them to get things done and done right the first time.
Most of our work now is going to be seasonal and we'll use our retirees as lead drivers and job bosses.

Unfortunately, age is accepted as a bona fide occupational qualification for commercial driving (trucks, buses, tractor trailers). This means everyone 40 and older are not protected from age discrimination when it comes to commercial driving.

EDIT: Oops, the comment was posted a long time ago. Reader is probably no longer active, if so sorry about that lol (didn’t read the date). I thought this thread was ongoing until I saw the first message was posted nearly a decade ago so sorry for bringing it up.

That surprises me. I thought drivers were protected. So, 40 and older are not protected? Do you have some examples of that or a quote of the law that addresses age?
