Actually I think in your 50s is like prime truck driving age. If you’re like me anyhow. Already raised your kids and their adults, already got divorced so I’m single, nobody to answer to except the truck in the open road. Lol

Average age of an OTR driver is likely 50-ish. Can’t see it being a problem. I plan to drive until I’m physically unable to.

That's true to a great extent. We usually required five years of comparable experience and that narrowed the applicant file down quite a bit.
The older drivers...which was most of our people...tended to be more reliable, easier on the equipment, good to get along with and they tended to stick around and not quit the first time somebody hurt their feelings.
Did they holler and complain some times when things didn't go right? Of course they did. They're human. Usually they were looking for a solution to the problem while they were griping instead of just standing there waiting for somebody to wipe their nose and do their thinking for them.
I sure never heard the whining that I see and hear from some of the younger drivers
The older drivers set a standard that a lot of the younger ones couldn't meet and didn't care enough to try.

I have never seen any trucking company claiming that a certain maximum age is a Bona fide occupation qualification. I think you are mistaken.

The over age 40 protection does apply to truck drivers. The posting that says they are not is wrong, and cannot provide any legal cases to support his comments.

Right there in the last link, hit crtl-f and type in "truck."

"The bus driver cases are probably applicable to any job where
sudden illness presents a substantial safety risk to the employee,
fellow employees, or the general public. Examples might well be
truck drivers, pilots, firemen, police officers, and steeplejacks."

    And it's footnote:

    "See 29 C.F.R. §§ 860.102, 860.103; see note 15 supra."

In addition, from Usery v. Tamiami Trail Tours, Inc.,

"Motor bus carriers, along with all common carriers, are charged both under considerations of public policy and by the operation of law with exercising an extraordinarily high standard of care for the safety of their passengers. Pursuant to the Interstate Commerce Act17 as well as other *232laws,18 the Bureau of Motor Carriers Safety has issued detailed regulations affecting drivers 19 among other aspects of motor car-, rier passenger operations (49 C.F.R. Parts 390-396). These regulations prescribe minimum qualifications for the drivers of motor vehicles and minimum standards governing the forms of employment applications, written and road tests to be given, and physical requirements applicable to drivers (49 C.F.R. Part 391). They further impose the rules under which motor vehicles shall be driven (49 C.F.R. Part 392). The hours of service permitted drivers are also set out in detail (49 C.F.R. Part 395) (see note 16, supra). That these regulations are minimum standards only is expressly provided—

Nothing in parts 390-397 of this subchapter prohibits a motor carrier from requiring and enforcing more stringent rules and regulations relating to safety of operation (49 C.F.R. Part 392.1(b))."
