Has anyone heard how many crashes have actually been caused by a collision mitigation system (CMS) because the sensor/radar picked up an overhead road sign and slammed on the truck’s brakes when another vehicle was following too closely?
While I understand the concept for using CMS, it still seems to have some flaws in the system. What do you think about CMS?

Potential flaws with the collision mitigation systems (CMS)

I took it off my truck because it nearly caused 3 major wrecks in a 2 month period. After it freaked out and hard locked my brakes on i80 in NE while it was snowing and no vehicle was within 1500 yards of me causeing me to almost jack knife...well i took it off my truck for a reason. Another "fun" one was i went into a scrap yard and it kept hard locking my truck because it read the scrap as me about to hit a vehicle. Had to actully unplug it then go to a dealer and pay them to clear the check engine lights that caused just to unlock my brakes.....and this 2 days after i paid the dealer to adjust and calabrate it.

I'm a company driver and can't take it off the truck, but it's both frustrating and potentially dangerous the way it will jam on the brakes for a #### road sign. I've had it happen to me numerous times on I-95, and sometimes the vehicle behind me was close enough where I was concerned they might run into my trailer... but thankfully they didn't. It's hard to believe the Feds are looking to make the CMS mandatory for commercial trucks with this kind of issue clearly happening.stuckinthemud, Flat Earth Trucker and tscottme Thank this.

I stopped using the cruise control with these newer trucks. I’m governered at 65 so I just keep the foot down when the speed limit allows it. Throttle pedal overrides the collision mitigation system.

My 2022 Volvo VNL760 was sent without the sensor thingy due to supply shortages. So, haven't had any issues with this in my current truck. My old truck, a 2019 VNL760 had this problem. But, it never slammed on the brakes so hard that it caused a potential accident. And, as mentioned by another,, if you don't use the cruise, it doesn't engage the automatic braking and use of the accelerator pedal overrides it also. So, with my Volvo at least it was only an occasional annoyance. I've heard that on Kneworths it can be a real problem, but I have no first hand experience with it.
In my opinion, it is one of those bean counter safety features that only looks good on paper and reports and charts. But, for the actual drivers, it is nothing but a potential disaster waiting to happen and has no place on a CMV.mjd4277, stuckinthemud, MACK E-6 and 1 other person Thank this. -
It's junk. I started reporting every phantom panic stop of the CMS to my company safety hotline for dangerous situations. Each time they had to be slowly and carefully convinced I had not just had an accident. The camera can trigger a panic stop and the radar can trigger a panic stop. If either the camera or the radar gets fooled the system attempts a panic stop. It is not just the radar, either system can trigger an event. Create a papertrail, your heirs might need one to win their lawsuit when you are murdered by your truck.stuckinthemud, Flat Earth Trucker and JoeyJunk Thank this.

You may not be able to take it off, but you could move the license plate in front of the radar while nobody’s looking, not that I would advocate anything of the sort at all.
hope not dumb twucker, Moving Forward, stuckinthemud and 2 others Thank this. -
If you do that the cruise control is disabled. My Freightliner's forward sensor would get covered with frozen slush/ice, report the sensor has failed. I would use the buttons on the CMS display to cycle through all of the system pages. Then I could turn the cruise control back on and use it without the adaptive cruise control/CMS function.
cycle through all the pages of the CMS and then turn cruise control on and off a few times and then turn cruise control on and set the speed. I don't remember the exact sequence of button pushes, so do every possible combination of CMS buttons and cruise-control on/off.Last edited: May 29, 2022

Well, when the radar gets blocked on my Pete the cruise works in what it calls “speed mode only”. That mean the cruise works the old way without the new annoyances.Deezl Smoke, Moving Forward and Flat Earth Trucker Thank this.

Mine displays false stationary object warnings up to five times per day. It brakes with cruise control on for vehicles that are leaving the road.
