I know nothing about reefers, but I see placard holders on a lot them. What kind of hazmat do reefers haul? Being a tanker yanker it's always baffled me because I didn't think you could haul hazmat then haul food grade, even though it's been washed out

Anything that needs to be kept above a certain temp. I've heard paints going in reefers

I used to have chem totes come in on reefers. Refrigerants at another job. Neither needed the unit to be running though.

Most anything you can put in a dry van can go in a reefer. I hauled hazmat quite often when I pulled a reefer. Maybe 20 percent were temp controlled, most of them were Pepsi ingredients or in the winter paint. Hauled lots of corrosive and pesticides as well and even some fireworks.

Um, I've been out of the loop for quite some time, but I thought it's expressly forbidden to mix hazardous and food in the same trailer, no? Granted, a reefer can be used as a van, but in many cases, the next load of food, the shipper may wonder what was hauled previously, especially if the floor is fizzing, . I'd have to think, there are plenty of good paying reefer loads today, why would you haul something hazardous, and all that entails?

I’ve hauled plenty of haz mat chemicals that had to be kept from high temps , temperature sensitive chemicals that couldn’t be parked in the sun for days and days and allows to get above a certain temp and couldn’t be allowed to get below a certain temp .
out from a port and hauled frozen chicken back to the same port in the same trailer .
BTW , the Coca-Cola and Pepsi concentrate syrup is haz mat , and must have placards.
It’s corrosive , that’s why you can use it to clean battery terminals and why on rainy nights when your windshield is streaky and smeared, you can pour a bottle of Coca Cola on it and it will clean off the windshield like it’s brand new .Last edited: Jun 16, 2022
