Unfortunately there would not be this much publicity if this was a car and not a truck. This is the type of crash (NOT an accident) that gets a knee-jerk reaction from politicians and lobbying groups resulting in even more restrictions. Stupid people will continue to do stupid things, regardless of what laws are passed. Sadly more and more people in this country don't understand that.

I have a notebook computer I keep up front, with a GPS program on the screen. An across-the-board ban on this sort of device would curtail that sort of thing, which would suck for me.
It's already illegal to drive recklessly, and if someone is obviously unable to operate safely, regardless of what sort of equipment is within reach, he or she oughta be held responsible.
I spent some time in trucking safety dodging through traffic and operating a video system (aiming the camera as well as operating the buttons), and a radar unit while providing commentary for safety videos. I had a perfect safety record the whole time. Some people can't chew gum and drive at the same time, and one-size-fits-all bans won't do anything to solve anything.

In NY state, it's illegal to drive and talk on the cell phone. The result of the ban? I don't know what the accident numbers are like since the ban, but I'm seeing plenty of people ignoring it.

As for the OP, was he just *watching* the porn.... or acting on it?
How will THAT ban law read?

Spacer, you make a good point with your post. I don't exactly remember the difference between careless and reckless, but I believe that one is worse than the other. I think that it is reckless driving that is worse. Any whooo my husband has opted to go to the Laptop logs, to keep himself out of hot water. Now we have the mount, mounted to the passenger seat, so that the laptop is accessable from the drivers seat so that he can do his logs from there, because when he's in the sleeper, he's not supposed to be doing his logs, or "on duty". We also have used laptop based GPS at times on the laptop, and he uses the screen for guidance. This kind of crap will in turn create some other law that will eventually ban a laptop from a truck. And ours is used for business purposes.

I just don't see why they have to create new laws, when these situations fit under the old ones.

For how many years has federal money been spent on seat belt campaigns and DUI education? Those activities still go on every day, lives lost every day. Some states aggressively go after cell phone violators but its like speeding, for every one that's caught there are a thousand that are never seen. There are much larger societal issues that influence this behavioral shift, starting with the poor state of our educational system that is more about standardized testing and multi-culturalism, and with increasing percentage of the population expecting government to care for all their needs.

It's not just the trucking industry that has changed over the decades, but our society. To borrow a quote from Mr.F. Gump - "Momma always said stupid is as stupid does ..."

I see a pathetic loser that is so obsessed with porn that he has to drive down the road watching it, Someone that is so engrossed by it that he can't bring himself to tear himself away from it long enough to do his job in a responsible manner...That's what I see!

A worthless P.O.S. that killed an innocent due to weakness and stupidity!

when i was in high school i did a paper on society and it's habbits.. we as human beings are pretty simple to read.., but from a lack of information even a book at a 1st grade level can be misinterpreted.. this story wouldn't have had much effect on the public if the mom killed in the accident was a drug dealer running from police.. society would have felt that he deserved it. agree? disagree? change the story a lil (we dont know much so we can spin it all day like a top) lets say the mom cheated on and verbally abused her husband, AND physically abused her children. and not the one time deal type of beating, i mean raging alcoholic type of beatings. would she still be innocent? would society dismiss this story as someone getting what they deserved? so much for the driver, yeah that's some stupid stuff to be doing, but i'm pretty sure if anyone was watchin porn and got into an accident they wouldn't tell the police. i'd say i was distracted by somethin.. and what are the chances of authorities arriving at the scene and the flick still playin? and he would have had to been looking at that screen for a hot min in order to hit a car on the side of the road. it's not like you look out the windshild and nothins on the side of the road, and you look down at ya flick and BAM!!! you hit a car on the side of the road.. where did it come from? jus wanted to mix things up..
