California 40 FT. KPRA with spreads

Simple really. Any trailer 48 foot or less was “grandfathered” into the STAA regulations. A 53 can have a spread set up, but must meet the KPRA. This is why you see 53’s with the rear axle forward and a lot of over hang of the trailer.

One company from South Dakota has whipped the 53 foot spread axle rules. They get a step deck with a very deep pin setting, position the fifth wheel directly over the rear drive axle and the king pin to axle distance is met.

 

Don’t think they’re exempt there. Those trailers are a TAC dodge for up here. The 244” max wheelbase is part of the TAC agreement that allowed certain configurations and weights Canada wide. Super B-Trains, C-Trains and 53’ trailers. As soon as you’re away from the specified equipment in the agreement you’re back to whatever the provincial maximum overall length is with no restriction on tractor wheelbase. No 51’ trailer in the agreement, so people started spec’ing trailers at 51’. In Onterrible once you’re out of TAC there’s no tractor wheelbase restriction, you just have to make 75’6” o/a.

 

I run my 53 in spread position all the time in CA, never been bothered
