I would like to ask that you include in your training of new drivers something like "road courtesy". Please allow me to explain.

In the course of less than 24 hours, not one but two of your drivers exhibited a total lack of common sense and courtesy toward other drivers, namely me. In incident #1, Swift and I had to pick up trailers that were next to one another, and rather tightly packed. Your driver had already hooked up, slid tandems, and was ready to roll when I backed under my trailer. However, having little space and knowing Swift was done and in the interest of safety, I waited until he pulled out. And waited. And waited. Turns out he was doing his rather lengthy paperwork. I walked to his window and asked if he could pull out and to the side so I could complete my tasks. After all, he knew it was tight as I had seen him walk around the trailer. He responded "do not get an attitude with me". I should add this guy looked about 20. Some minutes later, I spotted him up the road on the shoulder doing his paperwork. Oh, and I should note that as he was leaving the facility, the driver behind him blew his air horn at him, as he had paused there at the exit, presumably to do...well, you know....

Then yesterday, I'm bobtailing to a location in Hazleton, PA to pick up an empty trailer. The street I'm turning left onto is quite narrow, as evidenced by the damaged curb trucks almost have to run over to get out. A Swift driver (with a trailer) approaches the intersection to my left, so I stay back and wait for him (he was there first anyway). I wait. And wait some more. I flash for him to come on. I try the CB. Nada. So I go on to make my turn. Guess what HE is doing? Qualcomm work, and what's more, he's already moved left at the intersection to try to set up for the right turn he has to make. I make my turn, and he was there as long as I had him in my west coast mirrors.

So please, Mr. Swift...could you try to train your drivers on some common sense and courtesy? After all, we're all out here doing the same job.

P.S.: Is this the rule anymore? I mean, I've only been out here since '96, but this obliviousness among drivers is very annoying and is markedly worse just since I started. We all make mistakes, but please...use some of those grey cells between your ears for something other than echo containment.

No animals were harmed in the production of this rant.

I don't believe it is just swift drivers. I have seen drivers from a variety of companies big and small and even O/O's that have let courtesy go out the window.
I have also see swift driver be courteous, the other day I was coming over Mt Shasta, it was all congested because the chain control just started, I was stuck in the left lane and trying to make my way right, well, a couple of other trucks, either O/O's or smaller company, would not let me in, but, then a swift driver was kind enough to make room for me and let me over. Then, only a day or two later I was going over Donners pass and again met with cogestion due to chain control again, pulled into a crowded rest area, there was no where for me to fit, then a swift driver told me the cars behind him were leaving and he would back up and make room for me, which he did, and he also helped me put my chains on.

I too have encountered swift drivers who were not courteous, but I have seen drivers from all sorts of other companies, big and small who were not courteous.

My point is, an inconsiderate driver is just that, no matter whose name is on the truck. And for you to lable all swift drivers this way because of those that you encountered is not being courteous to the swift drivers out there that are being courteous.

I understand your rant, I just don't think it should be aimed at only swift drivers, but to all the inconsiderate drivers out there.

True enough, LT...but two Swifties in the course of about a half-day was, shall we say, enlightening?

    Point well taken, however.

I am starting at swift on tuesday, & will remember to be courteus (however it is spelled), not for their reputation, but because it is just the way I am, & the way I think it should be. Others are just inconsiderate pricks & are wasting air I could breathe, & I wish they would just stop it lol.

Well, I do realize that drivers are being turned out by the dozens. I also feel, that for some, who work for a big company, they feel they get lost in the numbers and so they develope a who cares manner.
When you drive for an O/O or small company, what you do may get back to your boss and you are lways aware that you represent the. So when you are 1 in a few you got to be on our toes, but when you work for a big company where you are 1 in a thousand or more, you know you get away with more or feel more anonomous.

I do know that with all the new drivers that are being turned out poorly trained and poorly paid, that a lot of the common courtesy and road manners are lacking in many drivers.

I am thankful you posted about being annoyed by the bad manners of other drivers. I think it is important for drivers to know that there are common courtesies and road manners and drivers that still care about them.

Dear 48 Packard, thank you for your letter re: our drivers. I know, I know, we put some real "winners" thru our training, but, we only can deal with what schools send us. Schools are just basic instruction to get students their CDL. Your two complaints were about 2 drivers that are too dumb to realize there are other people on this planet also. Any INTELLIGENT being would see that you were waiting for him to move and the other guy should have scanned the intersection prior to approaching. For your inconvienence, I have enclosed a coupon for a free tour of any Swift terminal with a free 8 oz cup of coffee. Now please excuse me, my tee time is coming up. Signed, The President of Swift.:thin:
