My 2013 DD15 always showed 14.1 volts at idle, now all of a sudden it’s showing 12.9-13-1 when idling.
Checked the batteries. 9 months old, and there was no issue. Decided to change out the alternator and it’s still showing the same.
Any ideas what else to check?

Verify the gauge is accurate with a good DVOM? Same voltage at batteries, alternator and cab power sources? You likely have a bad connection somewhere. Start measuring and find the voltage drop.

I’m beginning to think the sense wire isn’t connected correctly. I was told to connect the sense wire to the battery terminal instead of the R terminal. Would that work? While another mechanic said R terminal.

For anyone who’s going to come up to this situation because of the lack of parts. I got this alternator to work.
Have it charging at 13.5.-13.9v.
since it is a self exciting alternator without remote sense and had been sitting on the shelf for about 2 years, it needed to be excited. Easily done by taking a 5 inch 16 gauge wire and touching the positive terminal to the #1 terminal for a split second.
Now since the Cascadia alternator is a 36Si and has remote sense, the gauge will always show 14.0-14.1v and reduce voltage output to the batteries if they are fully charged.
remote sense wire helps alternators charge the batteries faster by regulating the output voltage.
This 22si battery doesn’t have that function.
So to remedy this issue, I pulled the 5 amp fuse from the PNDB box on the firewall until I can get the correct alternator.
Hope this helps someone in the future.Last edited: Jul 21, 2022
