You’re right in that it’s not worth it to move that hay in particular. It was just an example of a quote. It’ll probably sit there and we’ll end up move some of the more valuable stuff for that money.ProfessionalNoticer Thanks this.

It’s like with watermelons, a full truckload may be worth $4500 retail, in the height of the season they ship for way above that on some routes. And thats freight alone.
-
That’s really not a horrible price, burning up the better part of a day doing if, cows do no give a flying ##*k what it costs to run a truck down the road they just want to eat
But besides the point, you might want to try Mercer or landstarve, if you feel like rolling the diceChieftains Thanks this. -
What is the rate per mile that does work for you? I say that with knowledge that as cheap as possible is what you are looking for but realistically what is an acceptable rate?
-
Maybe he means poor rates for the customer . As in , the shipper is charging too much for the transport because they don’t want to deal with it .

As a farm , buying a truck might work for them .
Agriculture is exempt from almost all the rules .ProfessionalNoticer Thanks this. -
and this is why you have that price, you dont have enough regular volume and the pain in the keister for us is getting there, hoping that you load it well, and that the unload works, 1500 is pretty fair, anytime ive run hay, its been far cheaper than that (think 2-2.50 a mile) but gone further. That 1500$ is a day-rate, your buddy 2 farms over might do it for 1000, but now hes 500$ in fuel , 150 bucks for himself and 350 for truck maint and overhead (insurance, payment etc etc)

Maybe after many runs and he doesn't put any money into the equipment. It'll take several years to see a ROI unless he goes renegade and starts hauling commodities he's not supposed to move for revenue.
