Hello, i've gotten a ton of questions answered here and i'm thankful this place exists. Currently waiting on my hair to grow back out in order to pass a hair follicle after receiving a pre-employment letter to a CDL school (bottom of the barrel, but it's the entry i need) and it's given me plenty of time to find new questions to ask. i was curious about the legality of carrying firearms.
In my state, you don't need a permit to open carry, and i carry my pistol everywhere, but it only recently occurred to me that as a OTR driver, i'd be crossing multiple states that all have differing levels of regulations, not including company policies that may be against it either.
Does anyone here working for a company (not owner/op) carry a firearm? And if so, what if any hoops did you have to jump through to make that possible? Or is this overall unlikely for DOT drivers?
May seem like a stupid question, but i ended a gunman at a gas station in 2012 and would've lost my life if i hadn't, and ever since, this baby has been glued to my hip and sees more body contact than my phone. I'd imagine that i'd be making a lot of city-walks during rest/downtime and i wouldn't feel as safe in today's environment without the ability to defend myself. Thank you for any information.

I'd focus on passing the drug test before you think about carrying a gun in the truck.

There are guys who do carry. You will be crossing into states that ban guns and have very restrictive laws. Don't get caught in New Jersey with a firearm or you will be headed to the grey bar motel. Companies as well have firearms banned. When I was otr we had a driver who was fired for having a gun that a mechanic found and dropped the dime on him.Flat Earth Trucker, InTooDeep, bryan21384 and 4 others Thank this.

Literally just waiting, been sober for months, just growing out the hair. Seems redundant not to focus on further questions instead of pretending focus can increase hair growth speed.
That's terrible, i'd imagine i can put it in a safe when travelling through restrictive states or other people will be in/near the truck. Thank you.Lohse, Kyle G., Coffey and 1 other person Thank this. -
I would ask the person or company under whose Authority you are operating first. I suspect most of them will say no. If you do get a green light I would then start checking the interstate laws. Being aware there are some states if you get caught with a firearm you might have legal issues.

You can, but keep in mind with a cdl that gives the government the right to search your truck and contents without a warrant. Having a cdl forces you to surrender some of your rights.Flat Earth Trucker, bryan21384, snowlauncher and 3 others Thank this.

Thank you, i've never left state with my sidearm before and honestly didn't know how to go about that. I don't mind lying to a company, my life is worth more than their rules, i'll just have to be sneaky about it. Law is what concerns me, i'll check that out now, thank you.
I had no idea honestly, thank you. Sounds like as long as i do my research on interstate laws and get the appropriate permits (i seen one for 36 states, and other permits for the remaining states) then it looks to be legal, and i'd imagine even in the more restrictive states, having a locked gun separated from the ammunition in my moving domicile would be legal, but i'll have to call and check out those specific states.Kyle G., Coffey, Another Canadian driver and 1 other person Thank this. -
No problem. One other thing to consider is there is a chance you have to deliver at ports, military bases, and prisons. They will search your truck and will not let you in with a gun in your truck. Or they will make you surrender it till you leave.snowlauncher, tscottme, BoxCarKidd and 2 others Thank this.

I appreciate the information, zero issue surrendering to secure areas like that. I had no idea about interstate laws, but did assume many companies would not be ok with it due to liability reasons. It's not like i can't breath without my gun, it's looking like i may go without for my first year of trucking and get all my permits during that time, THEN find a company with leniency towards firearms.Coffey, Another Canadian driver and CrappieJunkie Thank this.
