Former company mechanic alway put some grease on straps when he installed new ones . He swore it helped . Another guy would tape off tank and hit strap area with undercoating.

I was able to clean and remove much of the oxidation with white distilled vinegar and a scrubbing sponge. I replaced all four bands. There were a few spots that were pitting, so I patched them with J.B. Weld. Thanks for all the help.

You can buy acid at pretty much any trailer dealer, but like the others, i would use vinegar after using a hand wire brush, then the epoxy after drying.

If you want to remove oxidation from the RV Gelcoat should consider Meguiar’s oxidation remover. It brought back the shiny coating and I think it came out great. The scrub was easy to apply with a soft long-handled brush. Directions did say to apply on a cool surface, although that was unavoidable for me on one side of the motorhome. The scrub did not like the warm surface and left some residue on the motorhome, even after I rinsed the motorhome well.

I can recommend this oxidation remover to anyone who owns a vehicle with a fiberglass or gel coat surface. There is no questioning its oxidation-stripping capabilities, making it worth the money.
