Ya ...... a $135,000 custom ordered commercial vehicle in a 1-owner 3-operator self-built company, boss isn't taking chances, and at my age knowing full well what mega corps are all about, I wholly concur with him.

And this is how long it takes to get anydamnthing done on a 24hr wrecker.

I haven't done any reading nor have I got to my external meter.

I have, however, done these things. .....

Got rid of the right angle and ran a co-phase cable picked up at FlyJ out of convenience (I'm in the middle of nowhere ).

Spread my mounts as far as I could, just a 1/4 inch from the outer curve now.

Road check = crap transmission, but I could hear great.

Got to thinkng back to my youth watching all the trucks, and the shiney metal mirrors with antennas mounted, and my own car stereo installs and whatnot ....... so I'm thinking that physical ground issue on these Freightliner 2022 M2 mirrors.

These mirrors feel & sound as if some kind of metal alloy composite what-the-hell-evers, and the arm to door mount is definitely composite plastic hoohah crap, no telling the bolt-to-door arrangement.

So I ran a ground wire from each mount to a bolt on the inner cab ceiling structure.

Eurkea, I'm all over yer channel 19 now, lol.
I hear everyone and they hear me just as fine, been yapping away here & there up & down 40.

And I reckon I'm not just a wannabe cuz I got muh mike hanging high on a retractable tether so there !! haha

    Thank you everyone! !

Someday you still need to use an external SWR meter, just to make sure your antenna system is okay. Ya I know I sound like a broken record. But hey thanks for reporting back. I'm glad it's working for you, that's the main thing.

    Indeed.

I have it in the truck, next bit of free time I'll catch open field and see what I have.

Between impounds & rez wrecks & semi wrecks & load calls & ......... ok I'm out of breath now, lol.

    Night Stalker10 Thanks this.

At first when you said you were worried about a 1.2 SWR i was thinking “ya wont get much better than that, lucky to have that in a truck” but then i re read where you said it was across the whole band. Yes definitely get some sort of external SWR meter or borrow one from someone if possible and check the channels. I have seen some 90 degree connectors actually add more impedance into the circuit, causing a higher SWR, but those were usually the cheapo ones found at swap meets. I ran small ground strap from my mirror mounts, to the door hinges, then down to the battery then to the frame and that had a wonderful effect on my ground for both my CB setup and my Ham radio setup when i was trucking last. It was a 2015 Cascadia.
Definitely check or get someone to check the SWR for you. A high SWR can blow the final out of the radio and/or cause stray RF to get into things you dont want nuked, even at 4 1/2 watts.

Ok, here we go, I finally got to the external test.

    Recap of the setup ....

    2022 Freightliner M2 106 ExtCab Wrecker/Rollback.

    West Coast mirrors
---- very alloy sounding, composite door mount, tx & rec was zero.
---- Ground wire added (not flat, not short) from antenna mount to cab steel structure, tx & rec became very clear.

Unit: Cobra 29LTD Classic (no mod as far as I know, tow salvage goody)
Antenna: Dual Tram NH-4-HC 4' Steel whip, Base Load
    Addition: Firestik 6" recoil spring
    Mirror Mount: Flyin-J Heavy Duty,
    Cable: Amazon RoadPro RP-18CCP 18' Co-Phase Cable
Spread: Whip to whip at the base load - 105"
Heigh Above Cab Roof: 3'9" of steel
Whip to Baseload Depth: 3/16" below lower set screw.

Mic: Amazon, Pro Trucker DP56 w/noise cancel.

    Meter: Workman SWR-3P 10/100 Watt

    Test Area: Open Desert

Note: ground connection was for test, bare will be replaced with ring connctor & heat wrap.

    And the results ......

Tx & Rec are crystal clear.
Chatter on it yesterday, truckers were on 40 while I was sitting over a mile away, with town in between, and my wrecker tucked in the driveway between the house & RV.

If thats in the reverse position and set properly i think its good swr wise but the power looks low. Im not familiar with those type of meters though
