I have a 2004 volvo 780 with a 460 ISX I lost power and I'm getting heavy black smoke. My codes are
PID 27
Out of calibration
MID 128 PID 27 FMI 13
MID 128 PID 412 FMI 0
MID 128 PID 111 FMI 1
EGR TEMP
Any ideas where can I get the meaning of the codes?
Or suggestion of what is wrong with this thing?

heavy black smoke, injector?
-
EGR related my guess......EGR valve sticking or stuck open, Plugged EGR (soot)
Edgar2191 Thanks this. -
I also have had these problems with my 04 780. I have spent almost $35000.00 IN THE LAST TWO YEARS ON THESE ISSUES. It is indeed a bad egr........
you should seriously get two of them and keep one in the side box.....
Also, have an overhead done, this will tell you if it's an injector at all. I just had my 1 and 3 injector replaced, due to loss of power. No black smoke, but I had a whitish/blue smoke for the better part of a year, and it wound up being an injector issue.
These are the worst engine cummins has ever made, and they will tell you that themselves!!! Take it to a Volvo dealer, the hourly rate is a bit higher but the work will be much better also!
Any questions you have PM me, I have full records and will be glad to share, at least that way it will cost you less than it did me due to proper diagnosis before you get in the shop..... may save you some time on the "INsight" machine and them on the engine repairs........GL, and like I said, feel free to contact me about it more in detail. -
Ok I took my egr valve out, I was stuck open, I plugged the electrical connectors back on, and grounded the egr and my wife turn the ignition on for 30 seconds and nothing happened , Then I called a mechanic in NJ and he told me that if can't shut it off by hand the thing was stuck for good, and told me to go ahead and slammed shut, A piece of wood and a hammer did it. He told me that is what he does when the costumer don't have the $ 863,56 for the egr valve. He says that he welds the valve shut and the engine is going to run fine. So I'll let you know real soon, I'm fixin to put it back on right now.
Thank for the answers and the interest guys.

nice.. Looking to hear back from fred on egr.

I really hope you don't have to run CA. they require a working EGR to run....... the other states you will be good in, and actually will probably see an increase in your fuel economy.

Ok I tested the truck bobtail this morning, power is back, black smoke is gone and I can hear and feel the turbo kicking in again, water temperature is 180 but is 27 F up in NH, looks like she is got plenty power now, the only thing is a hissing noise when I step on the gas. Maybe is a clamp that I know I didn't tight enough, Did not see any exhaust coming out of the valves. So far so good. I let you know guys how is going to turn out with a load on.
Thank's again

The Hissing could possibly just be the turbo. I have noticed that almost every time they take mine off they tend to put it on again on a slight twist.........Makes for a noise almost every time. Not sure why they can't replace it exactly as it was?
