Gashauler pretty much nailed it as per Christmas fuel. I've never seen the DOT inspect or enforce this either, since it's not a "safety" concern, but rather more of a tax evation issue. And yes, it is the internal REVENUE service that inspects and cites for this.
As for additives to prevent gelling - they are all worthless in my book. Years ago I believed in power service, but that was before the days of low and ultra low sulfer juice. I only trust a blend of number 1 with number 2 these days.
The best way to prevent gelling is to leave the truck running. A service call for the mechanic to come out and ungell you will be in the $200 range. As I type this, $200 will get you about 100 gallons of fuel for alot of idling. Most guys who have never been gelled up, wont appreciate this untill it happens. -
I'm curious, do you owner ops add any additives to your oil or fuel? I'm not really interested in anti-gel, but more toward better fuel mpg or better performance.? The reason is, most BIG companies dont worry about this and only make sure that the oil change is done on time etc.... but they never add anything as far as a additive- which you see in the truck stops and advertised on satelite radio.>? Thanks for your input.. Drive Safe.

The cap that says oil,
You only put clean fresh oil in that hole.
The cap that says fuel,
You only put clean fresh fuel in that hole -
That is about as smart arse as they come.

Good luck with that plan this time of year without a little "Hows" -
Well, Pardner, you line up 100 drivers and 50 will swear by adding additives, and the other 50 will say don't waste your money. But I do add anti-gel at about 10 degrees above. Could probably wait until zero, but need to consider vehicle moving at 55 in 10 degree weather, I'm thinking chill factor on the fuel tanks.
