I doubt the big players are doing contracts yearly. When I drove for my old boss pulling flatbed his contract with Home Depot was 4 years at a time for pulling out of the lumber DC going to the stores.

The big players are also spoiled when it comes to trailers. Loaded drop trailers don’t have to be dealt with until they feel like it. They have a yard full of empties when they need them.

Believe me there is a backside on that coin that most, well maybe only some, shippers take into account. They can drive the rate down as much as they can, but there is a certain point that even the cheaper carriers will not have that account on priority. A shipper could go from having new or almost new trailers on their lot with stellar performance from a carrier to derelict equipment that needs a service call before hitting the road with a driver that’s one issue away from abandoning the truck and the load anyway.

But the almighty dollar knows all.

At this point, I am just getting rid of a headache,” Magarin told FreightWaves. “I don’t like what’s coming down the pike. The company is still profitable but the margins are getting thinner and thinner. Interest rates are going up, the price of parts has tripled and the cost of new equipment is outrageous.”

Every housing market is different. Around here double wides on 3 acres and 75 year old flips that need a lot of work are crashing back to reality. New constructions and nice homes are not.

Our 2.18 interest rate feels better every day. A couple more years our payment goes to 0, but we'll enjoy it till then.
