I was a CDL instructor for a few years and I always told my students that their record is all that matters. After a few months, maybe 6 if they keep it clean they can go just about anywhere - except to a eastern Europe owned company in Chicago ;)

I personally have nearly 4 million safe miles, 2 million without a ticket. I can go anywhere I want. I bought my own truck going on 5 years ago, and never looked back.

Well congrats, OP. My three years clean driving almost doubled my wage in early 2007, increased it by 25% in 2010, and then who knows what the limit is at my current company that I started in 2015.

As for how to identify a good driver...in any situation where I'm in the passenger seat, I look for floating gears. Once we get started, I look at following distance. If I see a car doing something squirrelly and he lets off the accelerator, I know he has that weird psychic power that we come to possess eventually.

If those three things are in place, I could pretty much sleep like a baby.

Off topic obviously but I'd love to hear more from you and others that moved here from other countries. Curiosity I guess. What made you want to come here and what makes it better? Where were you from?

Drivers who remain spotless in less than ideal situations are good drivers.

Worked for a owner operator powered company.

At times they could be the most contrary and picky about the work on hand.

In comes a new guy 'Jack'; clean record. Had a heavy polish or mid eastern accent.

Every time he walked up to the window he said 'What do you have?" and take the load I offered with "Okie Dokie"; turned and walked away to do it.

6 months later he was number one earner and it didn't change how he worked.

It's too bad that cloning people is so far in the future. A few guys like that would sure cut down on the amount of Rolaids a dispatcher chews.

It’s almost like constantly rolling, especially on percentage, makes everyone money.
