I read everywhere that Horse Power doesn't matter, it's torque and gear ratio that matter.
I have a Freightliner DD15 455HP, 13spd, 3.08 rear ratio (I am not the driver, I'm the owner).
(Edited after I saw a comment by another user @W923 )
Now I am looking to buy a 400HP with cummins engine.
Will a 400hp, DD15 or Cummins of the same torque perform just the same on flat terrain as well as hill? What difference will I notice from the 455hp?
Can a 400HP truck carry 35K 53ft van load on steep grade easily?

Another Canadian driver Thanks this. -
Back in the day they hauled those same weights with 300 hp. Just wasn't quite as fast going up.
Don't worry about it, just drive it.Dino soar, Cattleman84, MartinFromBC and 6 others Thank this. -
The world was built the first time with 220 Cummins and old Mack's. Like @AModelCat said I wouldn't worry about it

Thank you. Yes, I understand what you mean. But since I have a choice to buy higher HP, I am trying to understand the concept before I do and regret it later. There is this walmart truck 400hp Cummins ISX15 with 2.47 ratio. I want to buy it but I'm afraid it may not perform going up hills in some areas like Pensylvannia or sometime W Virginia.
You think that concern is overblown? ThanksOLDSKOOLERnWV and Another Canadian driver Thank this. -
You certainly won't be the first one up the hill but it'll do the job just fine. But if it was me I'd go for the higher HP oneMartinFromBC, bzinger and Another Canadian driver Thank this.

I can't address your specific concern, but as a general rule I don't think you will realize any savings from running less horsepower in the hills.
Good to see you here @Caterpillar Cowboy !OLDSKOOLERnWV, MartinFromBC, armo and 2 others Thank this. -
Thanks.
Derating? I am not sure what you mean. Does a lower HP engine derate more than a higher hp? I am not quite sure why you brought up deration here. Please elaborate. Thank you. -
Oh I worked for a mega like most people here and they’d throttle the engines. If you work in the east like around PA I wouldn’t go anything under the horsepower of the truck you currently own. A DD15 with a full load will slow to around 40mph on a lot of the hills in PA. I can go look at the exact horsepower of my truck but a DD13 is for plains like the midwest. And for day cabs. Not enough engine for OTR.
I run fully loaded tanker.alemiss Thanks this.
