what is the difference between a 2 axle truck and a 3 axle truck that has 1 drive axle lifted?.... if you say you noticed the amount of 2 axle rigs running around everyday.. the i dont see why you would think its illegal... dont overthink it.

OP,
you may will find if you have lifted axels and the weight is sitting on the one that is grounded, you will have better braking and less wheel spin.
Unladen weight sitting on 2 or 3 unladen axels tends to chatter and float over the road rather than connect positively. If that makes sense.
Driving tri axel trailers in the wet with lifted axels, leaving one grounded behaves far far better than all unladen and grounded. Same can be said for the tractor. Truck brakes are made for load, the more load on one brake when empty opposed spread out over X makes braking smoother and more predictable. Potential lock ups are far fewer.
They can automatically lift or drop with load sensing, or can be manually applied. Auto is best.
Providing you are not exceeding the maximum weight of the grounded axel when empty you are not illegal. I very much doubt if steers, 1 drive, and 1 trailer you would exceed that.
You will wear grounded tyres more however. So its a decision between GVM weight lost for the extra weight of lifts to be added, costs to install, cost and life of existing tyres, and tyre cost saved by lifting X number of axels. Its along term solution for not all applications.
PBS may also be something to look at, but only works under 30mph generally.Last edited: Oct 22, 2022
