I couldnt imagine living up there during the winter however, and I was born(and somewhat raised) in Ft Carson/Colorado Springs. I would love to do some of the recreational things up north in Wisconsin/Minnesota and the Dakotas. I cant imagine how fun snow mobiling would be.

I spend summers in SD. Used to fly around the Aberdeen area now I fly out west. Had breakfast with the Governor in August.

It’s the cold that keeps it a small hometown feel. The cold keeps the rioting, flipping cop cars traffic away.

It’s an awesome place and we seriously considered moving there this past spring when we sold in Florida. We ended up in Fort Worth. If you don’t have family and friends there SD is tough. Be careful of being drawn in by it’s beauty.

As a native of the Fargo/Moorhead area I will offer this advice and it applies to South Dakota too.
When the Nws issues a blizzard warning it means get ur arse home and stay there ..and be fully stocked on groceries and booze for at least a few days .
When state patrol days roads are closed they are not kidding and if you disregard that and get stuck you are on your own until it is safe to come get you , if you live you will also pay a steep fine for being stupid.
Blizzards usually mean whiteouts and lots of wind which leads us to the term " ground blizzard " the wind is blowing hard it is creating whiteout conditions with little or no snowfall and the sun may even be shining.
It's gets cold there so keep fuel tanks close to full along with your propane tank .
This isn't flip flop country so invest in insulated coveralls and cover all your body parts because skin freezes fast especially in windy conditions.
Keep your vehicles well tuned and always have a good clean battery in them .
Coldest I ever saw in Fargo was -39 actual temp with a - 84 windchill during a blizzard which brought drifts upwards of 12 feet deep and several people died right in theyre cars in Fargo near the airport .
Nice area to live up there and good people , just respect and prepare for severe winter conditions...buy a good snowblower and maintain it !
Ohhhhh and once weather and visibility drops off beyond a certain point the dakotas and Minnesota will pull the plows off until the storm passes .
This isn't an everyday thing there by any means but it bears being aware of and prepared for . -
ohhh God, no... i hate winters there...

Biggest negative: bitter cold winters.
Biggest positive: Not very many Californians are moving to the Mount Rushmore state.
Rubber duck kw, RockinChair, Chinatown and 6 others Thank this.
