Yep. Like straight out of Vietnam back then. The image of the driver still laying on the pavement still haunts me. I was 3 when this happened and i remember this news report. Kens 5 in San Antonio piggy backed it out of Houston.
My god father hauled this stuff out of the same plant at the same time for another outfit. Said he thought he may have seen this guy out and around. May have talked to him on cb from time to time. Needless to say this spooked him heavily and he went into cement dry bulk tankers soon after and never looked back. -
Pff. Parking near hazmat.
I am still scared ####less when I am following log trucks

Interesting piece of history.
Is it only me to have noticed that all those reporters and people in general back then were speaking with much better diction and linguistic care...in a sense in more a theatrical tone?Val_Caldera, D.Tibbitt, InTooDeep and 4 others Thank this. -
This is the reason Ammonia is not popular as a refrigerant any longer.
Most catastrophic releases are not in truck stops and from experience I can say a large percentage of accidents do not have dramatic outcomes on the highways but accidents do happen.
Personal self awareness is key.
If you see something leaking, turn and walk away with the wind in your face until you can safely report it don't go looking to do anything else.
One early morning I was near the dispatch window as a foreign driver checked in.
Central told them to drop the load to us and they were scheduled out on another long load.
"By the way, we think the trailer is leaking."
Dispatch: What's in it?
"Aniline Oil"
Dispatch: When did you notice that?
"When we picked it up in Taft" [Taft LA and this is in Woodbridge, NJ]
So a 1300 or so mile trip with a tanker dripping a skin absorbed toxic compound.
Judging by the driver's "tude, I'd bet anybody in a truck stop mentioning the leak would get blown off and thankfully nobody touched the stuff.
Maybe the skull and crossbones did work to transmit the danger to anyone but that team.D.Tibbitt, TallJoe, Hammer166 and 1 other person Thank this. -
And the laid back E.R. Dr. smoking a pipe added that cool 70’s vibe to it. LolD.Tibbitt, mustang190 and TallJoe Thank this.

live once, you only will, light up that cigarette or cigar, and experience the light of speed in outer space..???
worry me not, whom parked next to me, even a cattle truck or chickens, or garbage, they be.
the worst thing that can be parked next to me, would be a camper filled with horney hookers and no money in my pockets.D.Tibbitt, Feedman, Sirscrapntruckalot and 2 others Thank this.
