I'm based out of the North Austin area (Liberty Hill) and there are a couple Crane companies in my neighborhood. Some place called Crocker Crane. Some of those CDL crane jobs that require the crane certs pay like up to $40 an hour.
If you are getting regular OT that's a lot of money. I don't know much about crane work but I've always seen those guys just standing around... lol doesn't look like a bad gig at all.

It is not bad work at all. Since I started driving back in 2013 my goal was to always get into hauling construction heavy/special equipment. The follow-on goal has always been to learn to operate the equipment so I could be a CDL operator and dozer/crane/steam roller operator with a construction company. This job starts out as a driver with a rigger training to signal man up to crane operator. It starts out at between 27 and 28 per hour. Unionized overtime pay for 6:30 pm to 7am, any hours over 8 in any day and weekends are ot pay. So built in promotions and raises. The only downside is winter/bad weather means no work and layoffs based on seniority. OFC I am not too worried about layoffs not many people want to do both the CDL and groundwork so I will be in demand, and even if I get laid off its union so I would be eligible for unemployment until I get recalled. This is one of a very few jobs that could pull me away from regional/dedicated driving. I am going to pray on this as I truly thought I was going to need some more recent work history before an opportunity like this came up.
I am in Copperas Cove so not too far from you. A lot of construction between I35 and 195 too. Austin is having companies and people move there so i believe i am well positioned to get a job like this.Last edited: Oct 28, 2022

Today's update will ask for thoughts and opinions.
Did my interview at a local crane company this morning. The first thing we did was pull out the tractor trailer and drivers' side back into a parking spot with a spotter. The supervisor asked the hiring manager how it went. The manager said, "well he can definitely back" Did fine with that. After that, I filled out more than what used to be the standard application with background check authorizations.
I filled out I9, W4, and direct deposit paperwork as well. These items I have always filled out after a hire and at an orientation. I know I have been out a while, so is this becoming standard pre-hire practice? Do you all think i might have been pre-hired pending background/dac/mvr checks? If it is not becoming the standard, please share thoughts and opinions about if you think it looks good once the background checks clear (which they will). -
Updates, this week I got T and N added to my CDL. Today we finished our classroom instruction with the hazmat eldt. I have been studying that for a few days need to find time to take that test and do the TSA background. I also got my official "your hired" from the local company I applied to. We are working out a start date as we wrap up classes a few days before Thanksgiving. They are thinking the Monday following. Need to do an OSHA 10 course this weekend so that is on hand. Thanksgiving week maybe look at the OSHA 30 and rigger certification courses to be a step ahead.
