Which is better? I realize that it obviously depends on how much the load is paying, but what would you recommend?

I’m doing dedicated on straight salary, $1400/week, and I like the security of a steady paycheck. Particularly when demand is light and I’m home Thursday night instead of Friday.

Right now? Rates are in the toilet, so if working somewhere using the spot market rather than contracted freight, you're gonna be broke. 25-30% of crap is just that, a smaller slice of crap.

    Based on my maths:

    1. Hourly
    2. Salary
    3. CPM
    4. By the load
    5. Percentage

    tscottme and Mjthompson Thank this.

Can you share your calculations, please. The implementation of logic in action has always fascinated me.

I'd say mileage over percentage. It's much steadier. Your load has to pay but bucks every time. If you're on mileage, it doesn't matter if the company takes a punch on a load. If it's percentage, it depends on rates and sometimes even region of the country Your operating in. I remember a driver who was pulling flatbed, and I want to say it was TMC. He was getting percentage on loads. They regionalized his runs because he lived in Mississippi. All he ever did was stay south and haul cheap lumber loads. He ended leaving them and coming to the now-defunct Builders Transportation in Memphis. He got paid mileage, but he ended up with a better check and the same home time. It really depends on the company and their freight base. Mileage is also good provided that your company has enough freight to keep you busy.

Depends on who the company is and what the rates are..
Mega fleets are known for being rate cutting bottom feeders for example, no way I'd work on percentage for one.
A smaller outfit with established customers probably has better rates so percentage might be the way to go.

It's TMC for %pay. They start out at 26%, but 26% of a cheap load is not good. I've talked to McElroy, but their cpm seems a little hard to follow, because they throw all the extras in as part of the pay, so it's hard to see where they get their 88 cpm.

I don't know jack about flat bed work. Maybe some experienced flat bedders will chime in. I don't want to steer you wrong.
TMC has been around a long time I'd think they would have their own customers and fairly decent rates...

    Good luck.
