I80 Donner summit this weekend

I was there the other night. It was chain minimum. Then I reached exit 184 where it was chain removal time. Some hours later, Caltrans changed it to chains on maximum from that point to 7 miles further east. The sign read 9 miles, but it was only 7 miles.

This outlaw went 7 miles on pavement Caltrans required maximum chains for with no chains. Of course I didn't drive fast at all. And with a chipped thumbnail.

As the 6,522,732nd driver who has done this, that still makes me a legend, right?

It always sucks there in the winter.

 

I have logged many mile on that hill. Taking a break from it this year not my choice. I miss the storms and watching all the madness on it. Yeah I know I'm a sadist just love watching the unprepared paying for the lessons

 

I like watching all the madness too...on the Channel 3 Five o'clock news.

 

To be fair, you have been known to help many inexperienced folks learn the way of Donner, despite being a voyeur of the carnage.

 

I know but only because I can't help myself. I blame my Mom for raising me right.

 

Donner is more fun when the chain removal is in Truckee. Going all the way to that small west Reno slush pit on the other side of the DOT area sucks. After getting soaked there, it’s almost impossible to leave with the trucks blocking the exit.

 

If you get to that point again just take the boomtown exit and go to the truck parking area to remove them much easier
