I'd love to be an O/o but it seems impossible to me to get the money to start out without a fleece, and thats just not an option.

Owning a truck is not all fun and games like some people think it is, It is more stress and headaches running a business like this than anything, all it takes is one bad breakdown to bankrupt you and if you think buying an old truck for cheap is the way to go, think again, it will only cost you more money in repairs than it is worth, everytime something breaks it cost thousands of dollars, not a couple hundred dollars like your car.
And don't think that owning a truck will make you more money, on paper it looks like you make more but after all your expenses you really don't make more money, but the one advantage to having a business is I can write off a lot of things for the business.
I've heard people say "I wanna buy a truck so I can drive faster than 60", well you might think twice about that when you realize how much more less money you make because you are burning more fuel.
Personally I think a person is better off driving a truck for someone, the company pays for the truck, fuel, repairs, maintenance, permits, and all you do is drive and collect a paycheck, no stress, no worries, if you breakdown the company will pay to have the truck towed, you don't have to worry about the thousand dollar tow bill.
If dealing with dispachers is you biggest problem consider yourself lucky, dispachers are the least of my problems right now.trucker43 and bulldozerbert Thank this. -
now i just got thrue reading a few post on being an owner operator and some of it is pure garbage and some is not.
there is nothing wrong with being an owner operator if you can handel it and you no what your doing , but it is a lot better then being a compamy driver and having some smuck boss you around all the time that alone would make me miserabel , aint gonna happen.
being an owner is not for everyone true but neither is driving a truck and to me paying 150.000 for a truck is just plain nuts just like having a truck payment of 1800 bucks a month is nuts , why wouls i pay 150.000 for a truck to pull a load for 150 a mile , my calculater just dosent work that way.
now you guys that are spouting gloom and doom about being an owner operator why do you try to convinc someone that it would be a bad thing , just because you couldnt make it well from the sound of most of you you didnt make it because of your attitude and that wil do you in every time the second thing that will do you in is the idea that your to good to drive a used truck that is equally nuts you simply have no idea what your talkng about a used truck will make you a whole lot more money then a new one and they bothe make the same money or can if you know how , but just becuse you didnt make it dosent mean the next guy cant do just fine , attitude goes a long way in being succesfull if your to much in love with yourself you wont make it if your soveling sugar .
we all have problems but a good attitude ands a positive attude will get you thrue every problem you run across but it seems that most of you would rather whine and cry about the business because you didnt make it and to find out the real reason why you didnt make it is simple look in the mirrior there you will find the reason and my friend you cant lie to yourself.
now its true being an owner operator is not for eveeryone but neither is driving a truck, the difference between the two is simple one you have to do a little more paperwork and the other is you have to put up with a boss who usally has a big smart mouth and even those that run thermouth about being an owner operator would punch that boss in his fat mouth cept you dont have the balls to do it .
to all of you that have the dream of having your own truck dont pay attention to all the gloom and doom you hear from all these failed attemts from drivers they failed for a reason and the #### truck had little to do with it most of the time it was there overhead and attitude .
you can make it in this business if you want to , it takes work but you can do it i know ive been out here chasing the wind for #### near 50 years and no im not a company driver and by god that wont ever be just aint gonna happen and you will never find a better business to be envolved in with a finer bunch of people o some whine and cry but most of that is long days away from home and frustration and some are just plain cry babys but in this business it takes all kinds thats part of trucking .
but if you want it to hell with the gloom and doom you here just get after it you can do it and do well at it just takes a little common sense and a lot of hard work.
best of luck to all. southernpride
trucker43, BigCountryChef, bobobrazil and 2 others Thank this. -
Southernpride is right on about everything. You don't need a new Pete to be a successful owner operator. You need to keep your overhead down. If you sock away a little money for the unforeseen repairs and keep up your maintenance you will get by and make a lot more money with a used truck.
Stay positive and focused on the goal...MAKING MONEY!
If you are making money and not spending it frivolously you will succeed.
Money keeps the stress down. If you have a fund set aside for things like repairs, tires...not chrome, Your stress level will be in control.
If you go into owning a truck for the good feeling of Big Pete, lot's of chrome and forget that you need to make money...you will eventually feel some pain.
Don't get me wrong, a big Pete and lot's of chrome are great...just keep your priorities straight. MAKE MONEY!
Southernpride said it right. Being your own boss is huge.
I say plan it out and go and do it!trucker43 Thanks this. -
Get your own truck! Get your own fuel! Get your own tires! Get your own insurance! Get your own repair bills! Get your own (fill in the blank.)
You know, for a few years I worked hard and saved my money, and when I had enough money to pay cash for a decent truck, I just couldn't let the money go! -
Get your own FREEDOM! Fire your dumb dispatcher! Choose where YOU want to go! Go home when you want to! I like making my own decisions..., you do what you are told. Get that?trucker43 Thanks this.

What kind of truck do you recommend. The wifey says she will grant me $20,000 for the truck. I am willing to try this with a paid for truck only. No truck payment for this guy. Been there done that. And we have resources to get the company off the ground insurance taxes bookkeeping maintenance exc. I had my own company for almost 30 years (non trucking) and find the thought of working for a ### hole not very appealing. I have my CDL-A and plan on working for a bottem feeder for 6 or 12 months first (swift werner exc). Need that recent experience for insurance reasons. Also I have found load boards on the internet so I can see how this mite work (internet truckstop dat exc). Also do you recommend flat bed or van. I know for sure I dont want to do reefer. The crazy hours are not for me.Also how much money can a guy net per year assuming no huge equipent failure.Running about 2000-2500 miles per week. Please I am mature and experienced so hold the insults. And please do not make fun of my spelling. LOL
trucker43 Thanks this. -
Well I certainly don't want to discourage anyone from doing what they want to do. I just want to emphasize the expenses.
Also, of course I do what I'm told, because they're paying me! Its my job. Sure, sometimes I go places I don't want to go, or deal w/people I don't like, but that's not reason enough (for me, at least) to lay out $$$$ for my own truck.
Look, I think its great that you're an O/O and enjoy it, but being a company driver isn't always that bad, and not all dispatchers are bad, either.
I hate to admit this, but if you're innately lazy (like me) company driving's the way to go! Man I'm so lazy, I take per diem pay just so I can use a 1040EZ! Hell yeah, my taxes are no more complicated than they were during high school!Lil'Devil Thanks this. -
Hows the slower guy a hazard? The faster guy needs to pay more attention and not drive like he's on a motorcycle!
I've thought about owning a truck myself, but the expenses and any little bit of bad luck will bite you in the ### if you're not careful, no thanks
although the dream lives on!!!
