Next time you’re out there in good weather, stop at the I-84EB rest area and take a hike. If you follow the footpath and cross under the interstate, there’s a nice area to go walk and get some exercise.

Looks like a good walk. I love the area out in that area used to go out there all the time.

If you have never been down 89 going to Bear Lake it is a lot of fun. One of the best spots to travel in the area in summer months. You can stop and go walk the trails for miles. Would love to take a bike down that area.

I don’t run out there, anymore. But, I love it, as well.

Well MO to UT was a pretty good trip. Little bit of wind but cold as hell at night. Had to Idle a few hours on and off since it was about -0 something when I parked last night. Got a whooping 7.5 MPGs going mostly 62, so not to good. Not to bad I guess considering I have about 4-6 hours of idle time this trip.

On a side note had a few really bad spots on I80 with Black Ice. About 5 minutes in front of me or less had 4 trucks all jackknife on that ice. Sure it was the super truckers that had flown by me earlier. People need to learn that wind and ice do not mix. Slow the heck down before you kill someone or yourself!

You don’t have a bunk heater?

Yes I do and used it as well. Just got so cold I was worried about my fuel even though it was treated. It barely turned over and started after sitting 4AM. So wanted to run it to make sure nothing froze up while the 65 mph wind was going on. Ha Ha

If the batteries are strong, you should be good to ~0°. The D12 has a great intake heater. You just need to cycle the key and let the element light go out, about 3-5 times. It should fire right up. Mine always did. Below 0°, I always idled. And, I kept a piece of cardboard folded under the bunk that would fit across the entire radiator. I simply put it in front of the rad and closed the hood, when idling. I’d fold back ~12” of cardboard, on the passenger side, before getting on the road. That way I still had airflow through the rad/intercooler and across the turbo. I had a beach towel I wrapped around my fuel filter, too. A child’s blanket would probably work better, though.

We ran 0W-20 oil, so that probably helped our engines to start much easier than those running 15W-40.

I always used Howe’s, during winter. The coldest I’ve dealt with in a Volvo was -15°F, in Rock Springs, WY. Left it idle, of course. Ran the reefer, on continuous, and on Howe’s, too.

Never use ether on a Volvo engine, as that heating element will ignite the ether and blow apart the intake. We had a driver ignore the shop’s orientation warning and learned the hard way.
