Next time you’re out there in good weather, stop at the I-84EB rest area and take a hike. If you follow the footpath and cross under the interstate, there’s a nice area to go walk and get some exercise.

 

I don’t run out there, anymore. But, I love it, as well.

You don’t have a bunk heater?

 

If the batteries are strong, you should be good to ~0°. The D12 has a great intake heater. You just need to cycle the key and let the element light go out, about 3-5 times. It should fire right up. Mine always did. Below 0°, I always idled. And, I kept a piece of cardboard folded under the bunk that would fit across the entire radiator. I simply put it in front of the rad and closed the hood, when idling. I’d fold back ~12” of cardboard, on the passenger side, before getting on the road. That way I still had airflow through the rad/intercooler and across the turbo. I had a beach towel I wrapped around my fuel filter, too. A child’s blanket would probably work better, though.

We ran 0W-20 oil, so that probably helped our engines to start much easier than those running 15W-40.

I always used Howe’s, during winter. The coldest I’ve dealt with in a Volvo was -15°F, in Rock Springs, WY. Left it idle, of course. Ran the reefer, on continuous, and on Howe’s, too.

Never use ether on a Volvo engine, as that heating element will ignite the ether and blow apart the intake. We had a driver ignore the shop’s orientation warning and learned the hard way.
