I had never stopped at this place despite all the annoying billboards for miles pleading with you to stop. It's the place at the NC/SC state line on I-95, I think it is also called "South of the Border."
It looks like it was a major venue back in the day. Motels, restaurants, gift shops, carnival rides, and a truck stop. I decided to check it out for once last week. There is still a paved lot at the former truck stop but no fuel. There is a small store next to the diner which is still open. I ate at the diner which looks like it is going out of business also and the food was bad. The carnival rides and motels all are appear to be shut down. I would guess the miniature golf is also out of order. There was a major billboard about that.
Basically, skip it. I don't know how they afford all those billboards unless they are permanent attachments, but some look new. I wish they would take them down as they are an eyesore.

The food being bad is no excuse though I will give you that.
kickin chicken Thanks this. -
"South of the Border" Rated the number one cheesiest tourist attraction in the US 10 straight years. I remember as a kid stopping there when we would drive to Florida in the late 60's and early 70's. It was a dump then and a dump now, and that was before I-95 was built, you would think after all these years they would have done some capital improvements.

One of their billboards used to say something like, "World's Biggest Tourist Trap". LOL
Now I can respect a place that tells the truth.Dna Mach Thanks this. -
Thats not half as cool as the worlds largest prairie dog
And when I say cool I really mean lame!

Oh, yes; I remember stopping by South of the Border (that's the official name of the facility) and one of the statues [and their mascot] there is called Pedro; when I was growing up in the Washington, DC area. My parents would take me there when we were headed to Florida on vacations. Now with my parents passed on, I still stop there when I head to Florida. Yes, it's a dump and yes it seems that it's about ready to go out of business but that's the charm of the place.
This has got me thinking and I will see if they have a website. Those South of the Border signs you see so many miles from the actual facility are a throw back to the "Burma Shave" road sign advertisment era.
With the increase of the Hispanic population in the Eastern US, I am beginning to think that some people would view this tourist facility to be politically incorrect.
Yep, just checked ...
it's South of the Border (dot) com for the website. They have been around since 1949 and there is now the third generation of the family that runs the place.CommDriver and kickin chicken Thank this. -
