My esteemed colleagues, hello. I am a driver who has about ten years experience. I was lucky, I had about a million estimated miles under my belt. I have hauled everything from freight, to wine tankers, to gasoline, to cryogenic liquids. Never failed a drug test, never did drugs. I got seriously hurt at work years ago and had to take a few years off work. Not my fault, but it became my problem surely. I miss trucking, because pursuing this noble profession brought out a tremendous amount of hard work, work which I never knew I was capable of. Well colleagues, I am considering going back to trucking but maybe not as a driver this time. I am interested in ruining my life and or profiting immensely by starting a trucking company.
I am near the Bay Area, in California. I am interested in becoming a subhauler of some kind for a petroleum company, and I'm wondering what those fellas are making. I'm going to have some money and I'm not going to let it sit in my checking account.
What do fuel subhaulers make?

I don't know of any O/Os that haul fuel in the Bay Area. There might be some but I don't recall ever seeing any.
During the busy season there might be a few loads available but all you'd get is the garbage that the carrier either doesn't want or worries about getting paid for.
In the valley there's always a big push hauling liquid fertilizer in the Spring but it doesn't last very long. Talk to Button in Vacaville or Mike Lowrie about tanker work for agriculture.
Check on potential insurance costs. Insuring a tanker is expensive.
If you have a potable water trailer and can jump through all the government hoops to qualify and get signed on you could work the wildfire season hauling water to the base camps. That kind of work depends totally on what kind of fire season you have. This season was very poor and nobody made much money. The problem with fire work is that unless you have really good contacts in the construction business or food grade hauling your trailer will sit idle during the off season.
If it was me I'd be looking for something other than tankers.Crude Truckin', LoneRanger, beastr123 and 2 others Thank this. -
Where is the money at outside of tankers?

Just for the record, any lapse in employment could be a problem. You may have to take a refresher course, I know, you backed up more miles, but it's where we are today. Here in Colorado, I keep tabs on trucking jobs, you know, just for gits and shiggles, and most company jobs seem to hover around the $30/hr. range. A gas tanker outfit in Pueblo, $60gs to start, can't find anyone. A local outside company starting at $28/hr. on a 8hr. mail run, or Nestle Waters out of Buena Vista, looking for a tanker driver, same 1 load to Denver, $30/hr. to start, no takers. I've gotten in trouble with my views on any O/O setup, I feel the time has passed for that, and a slew of great company jobs, heck, Safeway Foods going through some changes, I actually saw an England truck( non-union) pulling a Safeway wagon( union), so you get your foot in there, be sweet. And BTW, how many years? Things may not be what you are used to. Good luck,,company driver by the hour, the way to go today.

Start up a trucking business....
- in "Commiefornia"?
- in the current business climate/conditions (at the time of this writing)?
- in something as fiercely competitive as fuel delivery (incredibly skimpy margins)?

Some people would find that funny.
