Another company won't be ok with it, so don't tell them.
You're former military, so doubt you'll cower in a corner sweating crap like that..

yea I wouldn't sweat it, but I appreciate what my current company has done for me...taught me to drive, taught me to drive a manual, and all the fuel stuff. At this point, I definitely err on the side of complete transparency. If they tell me they don't want me doing it, I'll just try to understand why and then make a decision based on that. As you recommended, I may speak with a temp agency first and figure out if its even worth bringing it up with my current employer.

1st and foremost, thank you for your service. Many retired military personnel go into trucking. Problem is, they are usually horrified at the lack of discipline they are used to. What you are describing, sounds like you'd like to be a "casual" driver, maybe a couple "casual" jobs to make it work. Too bad trucking doesn't work that way, like say a free lance website creator. I'd have to think the logistics of several jobs would be maddening, and not too popular with any of the bosses. They almost feel like they own you, how dare you drive for someone else? Regardless of what some may say, tanker job is the best gig in the business, and drivers try their whole career to get a job like that. I say, stay put, show the boss you can do a good job, they'll take it from there. For the record, most gas tanker jobs are at night, and you don't want to drive an atomic bomb in todays daily traffic. Night time the right time,,,for tankers.

The issue I see unless your actual employer is a Temp service, would be every company you work for would have to qualify you for their company. Driver file with your application etc, plus drug test for every company before you can drive for them.

    No, it doesn’t sound practical.

You want your side gig to pay more than your main gig. If the side gig is going to pay SIGNIFICANTLY more (your words), why would that be your side gig? A temp company isn’t going to pay significantly more than your main gig. If it does, the problem is your main gig. Replace it first.

yea, maybe it isn't practical. I was just thinking my take home from the side gig would be more (maybe not significantly more) if I worked as a 1099 on an as needed basis, not on a regular schedule. I know my company pays a little more when we work on the days we aren't scheduled. I just think there may be opportunities out there for when either companies or o/o's have a driver out for whatever reason and need to cover a day. I do understand that the ELD issue/s may present some issues.

yea, a free lance driver is a good way to describe what I'm looking for. Sounds like it may not be practical in this industry. Appreciate your thoughts and advice!
