This article is a rebuttal to this article>> Can't avoid jack-knifing? Don't be a truck driver

and the 75 per cent of the accidents that cars are at fault and involve big trucks, is only around 1/4 of the total accidents (when there are fatalities) as about 3/4's off all total accidents do not even involve a big truck.

So my gripe about highway safety that is always aimed at big trucks is this, if you had a medical condition would you want to treat that has a 1/16th chance of being the problem, or 15/16's?

I've seen stats that say big trucks are INVOLVED in(did not say responsible for!) only 8% of ALL FATAL ACCIDENTS! That was from FARS, a division of NHTSA
And still we get painted as the ones who are dangerous!!!

The important thing to remember is that we truck drivers are suppose to be the professional drivers. Part of being a professional driver is sharing the road with bad drivers. It is our responsibility to expect something stupid from a 4 wheeler or even another truck and be able to drive in a manner that allows us to avoid an accident.

I just had a close call out here in the Midwest ... There was allot of blowing snow, slick spots and other cars and trucks on the road. I was taking it slow and making sure to give myself space to react. Well, another trucker was in a bit more of a hurry and obviously a better driver and got on the cb to tell me so and to step on it... Which I did not, but I let him know it was clear if he wanted to go around me and I moved over as much as I could to let him go... I was going 55 on a 65 Highway. So he went around.. Not more then 4 miles down the road I came upon him again... Only, he was tangled up in an accident and he had not been able to stop before running into a straight truck that was stopped because of an accident that just happened in front of him that he was able to stop for.

I suppose you could blame the 4 wheelers in the first accident and hold him blameless. However, I do not. I think he should of been driving like a professional and been aware that in those weather conditions it was highly likely he would encounter that kind of situation and need to be able to stop.

One other thing I am baffled about and just can't figure out. How is that 4 wheelers are responsible for all or most of the accidents on the roads and swift drivers are responsible for all or most of the mishaps at truck stops and shipper/receivers? Even though I have seen some idiot drivers in non swift trucks... which I am sure only means they are a former swift driver right?

All I am saying is let's be honest. Truckdrivers are the safer drivers and if we really need more regulation it should targeted at the drivers that are ACTUALLY RESPONSIBLE for nost of the death and destruction on the roads, not us!
Wouldn't make sense if ALL USERS of a PUBLIC ROAD were subject to the same rules, restrictions AND penalties?

As long as they can vote anyone out of office who dares interfere with their self importance, it will never happen.
