The aircraft was an ATR 72 turboprop. Very common in Asia and around the Pacific regions. The plane was on final approach to land when it went down. Whatever happened had to be something serious, either a loss control due to flightcrew error or a mechanical failure. May be a combination of the two.

There's actually a livestream from within the plane. Should be able to find it on reddit in the aviation sub. It's not for the faint of heart.

Saw the video. All you see is smiling faces before plane banks hard and just a wall of flames. Surprised phone survived all that and rip to all passengers and their families. Hear only like 4 people survived but are in critical condition.

    Hammer166 Thanks this.

I wondered about icing. Those things have a lousy reputation for not being able to carry much ice. That comes directly from a friend with over 3000 hours on ATR 72s. I saw the turn and wondered if they'd iced up and didn't keep enough extra speed on approach to compensate for it.

That thought had occurred to me as well, given that Nepal is a mountainous terrain country. I remember back in 1994 when American Eagle Flight 4184 dived into a soybean field in Roselawn,Indiana. That flight was in a holding pattern waiting to land at O’Hare. I was living in Illinois at the time, was watching the Bears getting their butts handed to them by the Packers(as usual) when they interrupted the game with the news report that the flight had gone down.

Like this crash the aircraft involved was an ATR 72. And even then there concerns about icing occurring further back on the wings where the deicing boots couldn’t reach. After that accident American Eagle sent their ATR fleet to southern climates where icing wasn’t as much of an issue (in particular Caribbean and the South/Southeast US. Ultimately they were replaced by regional jets.

Just saw the video on YouTube. Those poor souls. May they rest in peace. Whatever happened on that plane it was very quick. From the way the plane went down it looked like it may have stalled before landing.
