I've been considering a career in trucking, at least for a few years before going to finish my BA. I contacted I contacted CR England and spoke to a recruiter there who told me they had two options.
One is to run teams for 33 cents a mile upon compleating their training program. Not sure if I get 15cents a mile out of that or the whole 33 cents.
The other option was to be a owner operator for 96 cents a mile but I would have to lease the truck and pay a huge chunk of my paycheck every week towards the truck. I could return the truck at any time should I decide to quit or not work for them ( if it was not paid off by that time )
I would have to go to Utah ( not something I'm excited about ) but willing to do if I had to. I know Oregon has truck driving schools but I can not afford to pay up front.
I was wondering if theres any decent companies that train drivers located In oregon or near here..
I was also curious if owner operator was a good way to start out or if I should work for a company for awhile?
The one thing that draws me to driving truck is the fact I can't stand being around people all the time durring work. Sure I know I would always have a boss but my past delivery jobs have always been fun. Yea I have a boss telling me what to do but when Im actualy working I was always by my self making sure stuff got done...
Thanks

Haven't been reading much here , have you ?There are volumes of pages on C.R. England . 99% of them are bad .
A lease/operator is NOT an O/O . There re also many pages on Lease/Operating , 99% of them bad also .
The $.33 a mile team is split between the drivers .
There are NO decent companies anywhere training drivers . Why do you think they are constantly having to train drivers when there are tens of thousands of experienced drivers out of work ? -
Nope have not been reading much here at all. Just stoped by to ask a few questions. I figured 1k a week for O/O is good even if they are taking about 1500 a week out of my pay check for a truck I will most likely NEVER buy.
I was more wondering about the taxes and paper work side of it but I read on their website that they help out with that.
I look forward to starting school really soon and get on the road. -
Unclehams, do yourself a favor and RUN as fast as you can from CRE, they will rip you off, they will take your money, leave you broke and then they will fire you, take the truck and send you a bill for 5 thousand bucks for repairs. Read all the threads here in the bad company threads at the top of the main page here. There are more places to get a cdl and learn to drive than CRE sucky company. If you really want to go ahead and lose everything to them then more power to you.

Well I have read some reviews on these forums as well as a website that talked about ALL the companies that offering training and even HE said they are sorta shady. My options are limited because I have a felony from 16 years ago, even though I have a spotless drive record and no charges since then. At this moment I'm looking for alternative companies to apply to that will hire someone with a record.

Have you tried Swift? they have a school there in Troutdale OR. For starting out they are good and WAAAYY better then CRE. As was said stay the hell away from CRE. Unless you are looking to get screwed hard you would be better off never getting into trucking. They are the lowest of the low. They have even had drivers arrested for grand theft for going home.

I believe Swift has closed the Troutdale school (terminal still active). Now they do Pac NW training at Lewiston, ID. Post-school training (mentor time) is based from your home terminal (Troutdale in his case).
Troutdale is a mostly OTR terminal--and is a nightmare to find parking in. Sumner, WA handles NW heavy haul (costco) and has tons of runs into Oregon for easy home time. I have a post in the Swift section about heavy haul if interested.Last edited: Feb 11, 2010

As A Grad from Swift and from Oregon, they HAVE closed Troutdale, they will send you to PHX. Swift has a good school there, but 7 weeks otr with my trainer was HELL. He only let me back 3-4 times, Swift says "28 to make it great" I did my road test passed (no backing), was giving a nice Volvo and a Load to Denver and a Load from there, the 1st week I was looking at 2,800 miles, how ever I DID NOT! fell like I can back safe with only doing 3-4 I spoke to the Safety person and told him why I was not ready to go, he said " you passed your road test you will be fine." I went home for my 2 days of home time, was thinking about that the hole time. I went back the night before my load was to be picked up and gave my keys to my DM, He started to yell at me where am I going to get someone to take this load, I opened the door and said how about one of the 8 drivers sitting there crying they don't have a load and have been here 2 days. In short if you go with Swift make SURE you get your backing in, as you will learn just about ALL accidents are backing accidents.
May Trucking out of Brooks is a good one to work for but they don't have a school.
