Buying a used Truck from Ryder

My neighbor drives for a company and they change it every 10k


The rig I bought from Ryder had all the Maint records , even every time a Ryder mechanic spent 10 minutes changing a marker light , it was in the records .

they had the truck I needed and wanted , in good condition at what I thought was a fair price .
Your milage may vary . I’m sure every truck is different . And that was several years ago , before all the DEF and EGR etc .


But you need to have a competent mechanic check it and have a rigdig and a dyno test and a oil lab test , the later model emission controlled trucks can be VERY expensive to repair when you need some of the emission stuff replaced .

85k is too long, and 10k is too short.

We change ours every 35k and have yet to have a catastrophic failure. 85k means they want it to last juuuuuuust long enough to get sold.

 

The last place I worked performed sampling on the entire drivetrain. When I questioned 60K mile oil change intervals, the fleet manager assured me the sampling backed his decision. They’re usually traded at 650K miles and those trucks don’t stay on the dealer lots very long.

Sampling on the trans and axles has proven, to me, to be very effective at avoiding catastrophic failures. Blackstone knows exactly what’s going on with the component, off what types of metals are in the sample. That fleet manager showed me a sample of, both, a rearend and trans failing, which is pretty amazing to see. It’s definitely an investment in the equipment.

 

Cummins has an extended drain program.

When the engine is new an oil sample is pulled every 10,000 miles and the first drain is at 85k ... second drain at 170k. After that, if all is good Cummins will warranty the engine for extended drains.

For fleets Cummins samples 10% of the trucks and certify the entire fleet.

I may be a little off on the details. It was 5 years ago that I went through the program when my truck was new and certified for extended drain. I still do it every 30-35k though.

 

They do overweight loads and a lot of idling , when they have cargo on the trailer , they do not turn the engine off .

Might be a little late but my friend purchased a 2016 Cascadia in March 2022 and it's the biggest piece of junk I've ever seen. Couldn't believe he bought it. He was sold on the warranty it comes with, and let me tell you that warranty never ended up covering anything. He's had nothing but problems with it and has had to dump easily 20-25k into it since he got it. I would never ever buy a Ryder truck, just my opinion

 

I wouldn't touch a lease/rental or mega fleet truck with a 30 foot pole. Maintenance intervals stretched to the max, only has to last a couple years before its dumped onto the used market.
