When you get a rate confirmation, call Shipper and Receiver. Look on the internet for the brokers office and Shipper and Receiver information. Call alternate numbers for their offices.
Check the load board for broker reviews, if it's possible. Verify and cross reference the information you get. Look the broker up on:
SAFER Web - Company Snapshot (dot.gov)
I check broker with list from Baxter Bailey, when I have a doubt. They are a collection agency for overdue Freight pay. There are other companies that do this.
When you load. Check the BOL and Rate Confirmation information match.
When the broker says it is a blind shipment. That is when I get extra careful. I will definitely call receiver and verify they are expecting a load. I will discuss shipment details except where I am loading.

Sign up with a Factoring company that doesn’t require you to invoice all loads. Get free credit checks on all brokerage companies and direct shippers. I use OTR Solutions. If you can’t get credit with them I won’t haul your freight. I’ve never had someone not pay me using this method.

You don't need a factoring company to tell you who's good or bad. You can easily vet them yourself. There's always red flags when talking to these people and you really don't even need fancy subscriptions. Looking at the reviews on them is one of the easiest ways. Common sense and experience will be your guide. You're not a driver though so you're going to have an expensive and steep learning curve. The hiring pool you'll be working with aren't going to care if brokers are credit worthy or not. To them a load is a load and you're going to cut them a paycheck regardless. Or they'll quit and leave your equipment a 1,000 miles away in the middle of nowhere.
