There are times I thought to myself that I wasn’t ready to go O/o, then, after getting stuck somewhere talking to another truck owner for a while, I would wonder how they even know how to turn the key and feel better about myself, it’s not even like there’s one right answer for things, there’s a lot of different markets/jobs in this industry with different ways of running things that do work, but there’s clearly also a lot of wrong answers.

the Facebook I definitely believe in stupid questions getting stupid answers, although if someone is taking the time to come to this site and try to actually do research I try my hardest to give them my answer/way of doing things and hopefully they take it with a grain of salt and keep researching but Atleast a perspective on things about how they want theirs to work, although being an ####### in nature a few do still squeak through

 

Thursday morning on the way to my office I hit a truck stop to fill up my service truck on the way there. I am in the fuel isle just getting ready to fill the aux tank and someone comes up to me with a sob story he can't afford fuel and needs some fuel. He wasn't asking for money but fuel. He is a new owner operator and "lost" some money on a load and is in trouble because he can't get any loads without fuel. I told him I don't just hand over the nozzle and say go for it, I asked him what does he have to sell. He was pissed and walked away. Just as I finished up and was going to pull up, here he is again, the guy next to me told him to take a hike, and this time he said he has somethings to sell. So I got a laptop, iPad and an Xbox, he got 50 gallons of fuel. I also offered him some advice, go to my office and I will sit down with him and tell him what he is doing wrong.

I met with him Thursday and Friday for a few hours each time. The first thing I asked him is if he knew how to write, which took him by surprise, then I handed him a note pad and pens, told him to keep notes. We went through everything about his operation, where he made the mistakes and the problems he has with resources. I gave him access to some load boards we use to show him how to actually find loads, I told him how to sell his rig to a customer and so on.

Why am I saying this?

Because he is one of these new drivers who think this was so easy, and as a driver, he didn't pay attention to anything he should have. He has been here asking advice BUT ignored all of it. He has read my posts about how to pick out a truck and ignored that, he is broke because his truck had to be repaired after he had a level one and they put it OOS because of bad brakes. He was under the impression that a DOT annual was good enough and I told him these places like dealers just don't do inspections right, many just sign off on one and that's it.

But still if he ignores what I provided him, he will fail. He got two great back to back loads from one of my customers to help him so I hope he doesn't ignore the advice.

AND NO I would not do this for anyone but he wanted his xBox back and I made him work for it by dealing with an old man's lecturing on how not to run a business.

 

Dang boomers and their know-it-all and willing to teach ways.
