I've blown a turbo before and it sounded like a gun shot and clearly lost nearly all power. Can a turbo be intermittently working before it completely is finished? Truck will be running fine and then I lose turbo power and truck makes a loud purge sound coming from turbo area. I think it's turbo or egr, but I don't see any black smoke like the egr makes when it goes bad.

Just started doing this last Thursday. Then Friday pulling heavy up some hills it felt like I had no turbo as I lost power. Then a few miles later power came back. Same thing happened today where the turbo made a loud sound and lost power for 15 seconds and then it came back running like normal

The VNT vanes could be sticking on the turbo, the egr valve may not be closing all the way.

That's what it feels like..thr turbo is stuck and then it frees up.. if the egr valve wasn't closing would it throw black smoke?

Why do turbo vanes stick? Any solution besides new turbo?

It cold be the delta p sensor, or even a bad turbo actuator. The vanes stick when the turbo gets worn out. You need to have a computer hooked to to it, this way it can be properly diagnosed and you don't start replacing parts that are not bad.

These turbos are very Problematic The V-Pod and the Turbo Actuator (mostly V-Pod) are what mostly Cause the Sticking but The vanes can Also actually stick from Soot and Rust in the Turbo If the turbo is not to old you can take the Exaust side apart and Clean the vanes and free them up
The Noisy Blowing you are hearing Could be from a Hole or Air leak in the Boot ? Maybe Check for Boost Leaks in the System
