When asphalt gets well worn (ling time since it was new) it will get smoother, other than potholes, and when wet will have less traction. My city paid a settlement to the family of a crash victim due to not recovering the old asphalt according to the normal schedule. Obviously new asphalt will be slick after it gets wet until some of the chemicals are baked out of it.

 

2 ways to beat the Ca Kingpin to axle rules. 1 is have a tri-axle trailer 1 of the Oregon fleets had 53 foot tri-axle vans so they could use side roads in CA. The 2nd way is to have a 53 foot spread axle step deck with a 60 inch kingpin. Slide the fifth wheel over the rear drive axle and the measurements work out. A company in Brandon SD does that and gets stopped in CA, and the LEO is told, measure it, we are legal.

 

Shouldn’t both examples read “center of rear axle or center of tandem group” The way it’s written can cause confusion. Center of rear axle for single or spread axles. Center of group, for regular tandems.

 

What I posted is for groups; not single axles. There are separate sections for everything.

 

Back when I was pulling boxcars the rule of thumb was 10' from the rear of the trailer.

53' trailer with 3' kingpin = 50' from kingpin to rear of trlr. 10' forward was CA legal.

 

THE COMMUNIST STATE is the toughest. Typically 6th hole is MAX 40 feet from kingpin to center of back axle.

That's on older trailers where each hole is 500 pounds ( supposedly). When you're really heavy I'd say it's closer to 400 pounds.

Newer trailers are closer together and each hole is supposedly 300 pounds. Those the 7th hole will still get you legal at 40 feet max INSIDE THE COMMUNIST STATE.
