They revved a lot higher then alco, GE, or Emd engines. 2000rpm vs 800-900...
They copied the design from an abandoned German Jumo engine. From what I understand Jumo dumped the 3 bank design in favor of a 4(!) Bank design. All 2 cycle diesels. Germans generally perfected unnecessarily complex, but here the brits beat them at there own game.
According to that wiki article when they failed, they just swap em and ship em back to the manufacturer.
But they sure sound cool. I spent a month in Britain when I was 15. I had a britrail pass. You could jump on any train you liked. I went everywhere.
Emd 567/645/710 (all the same engine, different displacments per cyl) were designed alongside the detroit 2 cycle by Gm. In my bachelor days I had a 710 piston for a table.
If your ever bored E.W Kettering wrote paper on the development of the diesel unit injector and the 2 cycle EMD engines. It's a large PDF, but a great read of what engineers had to work with in the 20s/30s/40s. I've read it a few times. If you click on it, it straight downloads the pdf, fair warning.

Clutch release bearing is going out. Also have a rear seal leak. Probably just put in a 13 speed instead of fixing this 10.singlescrewshaker, CAXPT, Brettj3876 and 6 others Thank this.

As long as you call them ahead, if you're there at 7am, you'll most likely leave with your new 13 speed, shortened and balanced driveshaft, and new rear seal before 3.singlescrewshaker, cke, jamespmack and 7 others Thank this.

Anybody ever use Aircat impacts? Heard rumours they built Mac's impacts a few years ago. My 1/2 and 3/4 are on their last legs and I don't intend to fork out $2k for Mac or Snap-On.

I have not used or heard of aircats. I dislike snap on impacts. Balance is always wrong.
