I drove local and OTR for thirty years. I’ve been to hundreds of places and been treated very badly for no apparent reason and I could never understand why. I’m polite and professional, I follow instructions and I’m not a complainer.
I decided to come off the road and for the past year I’ve been a Yard Jockey and now it has all come clear. I always try to give people the benefit of the doubt but in the last year I’ve discovered there is more stupidity than I can make excuses for.
The best advice I can give a new driver (or an old driver who hasn’t figured it out yet) is be polite and professional no matter how badly you are treated. You can always make a bad situation worse by being unprofessional.
Read all the posted signs and follow instructions. If you don’t understand the instructions don’t hesitate to ask.
Don’t irritate the Yard Jockey. I’m always glad to help a driver if I can but remember, it is not his job to serve you. In my little world I don’t exactly control the weather but I can make it rain.
Unfortunately some businesses just aren’t driver friendly. The best way to handle it is to give them a bad online review and ask your company not to send you there again.
Good luck and stay safe!

That's great advice--THANKS!

Yes....a-n-y-body can "fly off the handle"....when faced with a confrontational person, or a serious problem (or both)....but a REAL PRO when dealing with the same will truly stay..."cool under fire."
The book of Proverbs in the Bible has a verse that says (something like): "A soft answer turns away wrath". It's the truth....

To all you new drivers. Please don't block up the place when you park to bring your paperwork inside. Find a spot out of the way to park. Use your head don't be a #######

Your best advice is to act the same way you acted while being treated badly, and hope for the best?
It is really funny that I, after 12 years out here, have had so few bad experiences with shippers/receivers.
So many complain about how badly they are treated, and I wonder at the why and how?
There are some I try to avoid, like Amazon anything, Dollar anything, simply because they are so long in doing anything.
But I am not treated badly by their people, it is just how they are made to do things.Big Road Skateboard Thanks this. -

Funny you mention “Dollar Anything”. Dollar Something is one of the first on my list of places to avoid.
My best advice is to be Professional no matter what. Maybe you misunderstood that.
I’m glad you’ve had such a great experience in your driving career. Unfortunately that is not the case for many of us. I don’t want to make it seem like it’s all bad. I’ve been to a lot of places where I was treated very well and have met a lot of great people.Kyle G. and Moosetek13 Thank this. -
It's best to avoid pulling trailers with doors all together if you can. Places where they have to congregate and steel mills tend to deliver BS and dumbassery in bulk.Kyle G. Thanks this.
