Tapered snout crank will look like this. Big center bolt holds on pulley. Two piece rubber insulated damper bolts too that. Just like a traditional crank in a car engine. As far as i know there is no viscous damper made for these old ones.

flat snout crank. No center bolt smaller dia. Bolt pattern and viscous damper still available from original supplier.

 

I found this on vibratec and says it replaces damper on small cam

than it must be the vt cause it barely has the whining whistle and the exhaust isn't hooked up yet thanks for your help brother

 

yes just talked to tech dept at vibratech and they say they do have the damper for our small cam

Thats awesome on the tapered crank one. That must be a rather recent development. I know Cummins has a group of historians and techs that have been working on the sidelines restoring any old Cummins model engines they can find that have historical value. So maybe they got that deal working. Vibratech has been Cummins oe damper supplier since the 1950’s when there name used to be Hydraulics Houdaille.

Yes. That is the right damper for any small cam or big cam with the flat snout crank. They have always been availiable. But like I mentioned make sure yours is not tapered before you order it. Most small cam 290’s were tapered up until around 1974. All The big cam 290’s were flat. The first flat crank small cam was the cpl 160 350. It was also the first aftercooled large production number engine offered.

 

OK my truck is a glider the original owner bought it with no motor or trans and put the 290 in it with a rto9513 trans and I had a w900 cutoff with 3.36 gears in it. In your opinion will this be a good combination for an otr truck to run from Wisconsin to Denver to Kentucky then back to Wisconsin?

 

could you also give me some things I need to have looked at to make sur its road ready besides having the valve adjusted and fluid changes? im doing new radiator and water pump to make sure the cooling system works also im doing pyro ,fuel pressure gauge is a boost gauge necessary? also im doing a 7 inch intake tube with dual 7inch x 33 inch vortox air cleaners , 6 inch exhaust off the turbo to dual 5 inch exhaust stacks.thanks again
