Hello fellow truckers
I just want to know do I need a heavy spec truck to pull 2 53ft trailers(turnpike double or LCV)?
Do I need super 40, 46k differentials or regular 40 work too?

My previous employer didn’t spec anything different. The drivers ran Gary, IN, to somewhere out east. I can’t remember the destination.Siinman Thanks this.

It’s all paved highway, I would think even 38k rears would work fine,

I would guess as long as you are on legal weight on axles it wont matter. But I have never pulled doubles so I am just guessing.

You don't have to go heavy duty but it's a lot better, with big hp also.

Some states require having x amount of horse power when pulling LCV..

In Canada lcv trucks need a bigger air supply and compressor.. I suspect USA has the same air requirements.
Albertaflatbed and Rideandrepair Thank this. -
That’s a good point. Bendix has a table with illustrations explaining the suggested sizes for different combinations. I wonder how many Trucks pulling 2 53’s actually have a larger compressor. I considered a tuflo 750 to replace my original 550. Would be nice, quicker recovery, especially for running air tools. Decided against it because of extra HP needed to operate. Possibly costing me fuel economy.Magoo1968 Thanks this.

Most 40’s can handle the added pulling weight on “turnpike highways “ no more than 3.5% average grade. According to the specs.
I would venture if your rears have the light weight housings ( stamped 9.5 mm) then they may not stand up to extended use.
11 mm housing would be better.
12.7 mm are used for the 46,000 lbs axles. We used those pulling super b trains, but we went off road with them into farmers fields and drove lots of gravel roads.Albertaflatbed Thanks this.
