They appeared to be well connected, not so well grounded as well not too bright but wonderfully successful in disconnecting their futures.

This happened to a guy in San Diego County years ago... IIRC, he brought a metal ladder to steal copper wire. Darwinism at work...

Back in the day, my friends & I would call these thieves "buzzards of the new millennium!" Now it's catalytic converters, nowhere near as dangerous...

We had a couple of room temperature IQ dopers try to steal wire from inside a substation.
PG&E fuels their trucks at our shop. The trouble-truck guy said they looked like a couple of those roller dogs that got left on the truck stop grill too long.Val_Caldera, KB3MMX, Star Rider and 3 others Thank this. -

Got another one for you. Three tweekers stole five large coils of used electrical wire out of a demolition site. They managed to get all five of the coils...later estimated at a thousand lbs apiece, into the back of a very thrashed F150 which had neither license plates or operable tail lights. Or a tailgate. Or tie downs either.
They got confused on their way out of town and headed the wrong way on a one way street. Upon meeting a car coming the other way they flipped it off, screamed at the occupant to get the hell out of the way, and swerved enough that two of the coils fell out onto the street. Thinking quickly, they whipped a U turn in the middle of the block...unloading another spool in the process, and found the first two spools they'd lost.
The only real problem they had was that the car they'd flipped off on the one way street was now parked next to the errant spools. With his red and blue lights flashing. And a really big grin on his face. He told us later he was laughing so hard he almost couldn't read them their rights.Val_Caldera, Star Rider, AModelCat and 3 others Thank this. -
