It doesn't say he was sleeping, just that he was in the sleeper. I would guess maybe he got stuck on the tracks and was trying to figure out what to do. Still doesn't make much sense though...

 

Looks pretty level to me. This is a busy section of track that he chose to use as a parking location.

 

You can't make this stuff up. If I didn't read it myself I would have never believed it. I mean how stupid can someone be!
