i got pulled over in indiana for speeding and while the troopers was standing on my steps i threw out my cigarette he asked me if i wanted the speeding ticket or the littering ticket i could not beleive he gave me that break.

By the way, im trying to figure out...why is it so horrible for an officer to be in the truck if youre legal? The officer would have given this guy the logbook ticket from outside the truck too.
If you have anything illegal, you should be driving a truck like a cascadia or peterbilt, with plenty of concealed spaces. SITTING IN the truck is quite different from starting to snoop around without reason.
A while back i had the virginia DOT catch me off guard...he was getting ready to hand me my paperwork (the stuff i gave him plus my clean level 3 report), and asked if i had my doors locked..i said no and while my mouth was still open my door suddenly opened. caught me off guard cause i was using it for an armrest! I'm pretty sure that he did that to satisfy the requirement that a level 3 inspection include a check to make sure you have a seatbelt. But dang, he coulda warned me! -
Mountainman's experience sounds very similar to mine. I was entering the USA.
When i crossed, they were doing it to every truck entering. But it was late night, low traffic. They had a bypass lane and I'm thinking that they dont usually do it to EVERY truck. Weird thing was that the x-ray unit was actually attached to a truck that resembled a power/phone company bucket truck, and it was parked in a little shed. They turned it off so you could pass through it without your body being x-rayed, then they turn it on when your trailer crosses in front of it. Thats why they have to manually search your cab. They even had a little bench to sit on, but it was covered with snow so i was just told to stand by it.
Yatista, I didn't know that but it kind of goes without saying. Border patrol basically has full authority to do anything they want for any reason or no reason. It's not like you're going to tell them no, when they basically hold the keys to let you back into your own country!
But ive crossed the border multiple times and thats the only time that i've ever seen a setup to search trucks in high volumes like that. Very odd. Usually i just get sent on through, and one other time the us customs/border patrol/homeland security officer (they seriously have uniforms that say US DHS CABP on them..lols...)....
Anyway, I have my little list of ports of entry that I prefer to use when possible. I will never go through Port Huron/Sarnia again in the winter unless its actually going to make a significant difference in milage. I almost lost control on highway 402 when the road surface turned into solid true black ice. I pulled out of a jack knife. The 402 isnt as major of a road as the 401, so it doesnt get salted as fast as the 401, and theres almost nowhere to park on itl. I needed to shut it down but there was nowhere to do so. The first place to shut it down was after the 401 junction, but the 401 was already salted. I ended up shutting it down there anyway becauase I was hungry and eating was going to run me out on my 14.That bridge also doesnt have a darn duty free shop. I dont really buy anything at those places but I forgot to get cash before i went to the ambassador bridge one time, and had to hit up an atm at the duty free shop. Hehe.

I have to enter through Sarnia because I run hazmat . They have duty free store on both sides of the Blue Water Bridge . On the Canadian side it's on the right right after you come out of the tolls . On the U.S. side instead of turning right to the tolls continue straight . The Canadian truckers use the Duty Free parking lot to get ahead of the toll line when it's backed up .
There's a fuel stop at exit 25 on the 402 . -

I fueled up at that place that night, roads were great. Got dangerously icy at the 50. Sure, theres lots of places in Ontario where you have to drive 50 km to get to a truckstop, but the point was really that that the 402 doesnt get salted as fast as the 401.
Thanks for telling me about the duty free. I'll stop there next time. If you go there, do you get to cut the toll line? I'll try that if thats what you're saying! hehehehehehe....... -

Only once have I been delayed for more than 10 or 15 minutes while they looked through the cab, the trailer and cleared the paperwork. They had me put it in a dock and go inside. They went through the cab with a fine tooth comb that day and I was there about an hour.
And yes, they are always polite and professional. Sometimes they're stern, sometimes they're friendly and chat you up. Other times they start to chat you up and then change tone and hit you with a question. They are just people doing a job, a serious one though. Be polite and professional in return and everyone's happy. Give them attitude like some people I've talked to and don't be surprised when they exercise the power they have.
