I noticed it this morning. I freaked out a bit, but I'm curious if I was actually in any danger.

Nope. Now, if you didn't have your brakes set, that'd be an entirely different story.

    "in any danger". Apparently NOT.

I honestly ain't NEVER READ such goofiness.
How does one "forget" ones' AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION Vehicle is IN GEAR??

Next time, leave it in REVERSE, for a comparative "study".

I, for 1 (along with 100's of 1,000's+ of other Drivers) ALWAYS disengaged ANY Transmission, THEN SET BRAKES.

That's the problem with autos.....in a manual truck, the second you took your foot off the clutch, you'd know it. But in an auto, you don't necessarily.

Learn from your mistakes and don't make them again. Most people just utter some excuse, blame anyone but themself, and are as likely to do it again in a week and the night before they made the mistake the first time.

Develop the habit, before you leave the driver seat, to get out or start a break and touch all of the important controls and verify they are set as they should be for what you are about to do. The airlines have an impressive safety record because they standardize their operations and they back it up with a checklist. Any Captain can fly with any co-pilot. In trucking everyone has their own name for every item and every maneuver.

Most Auto Transmissions. if not all, will automatically drop into Neutral after a short time parked. The dash indicator may not switch off D, but the transmission has switched to N.

My new VNL 860 is made to auto go to N when parked. I never put it in N when I stop since it is designed not to worry about it.

Used to happen fairly regularly when I did AAA roadside. Call would be for a jumpstart and I'd get there and the thing would be in drive. L O L
