The answer to your question is obvious to the majority of people. The really good hauls, the high paying hauls, are still out there but the people who have them aren't talking about them. That's not going to change anytime soon.
This is a bad time for trucking and anybody who gives away a part of his income base probably won't be around very long.

They also require more then rolling 30k ~1000 miles, backing in a door and falling asleep…

everyone says they want to make money, but all they want to do is drive, so their list of things they won’t do is a mile long, won’t unload themselves, won’t make multi stops, won’t run heavy, won’t run here, or there, or any where etc, those are the ones you make money on

I average $5+ a mile with a 40% dead head living in the north east, no one wants to come here, so I get a 6-10 stop, ~40 pallet LTL load that pays both ways

I don't mean any disrespect to any of you guys . But if you guys can't make it as 100% independent O/O get out of this business. Drive for someone who pays you well.
I don't understand how can someone invest lots of money in buying equipment, open up their business, take the risk every day driving in America , risk their health , leave their family for weeks or months,
takes the responsibilities for the load, takes the risk with FMCSA or DOT closing their business, and end up waiting for mega carriers to tell where, when, how, why you must run your business???? how much you can get pay, ????? seriously guys. All you doing is helping those mega carrier become stronger monopolies or oligopolies. basically you guys are helping them to destroy the trucking industry as we know it.

Nah, I don’t want to drive for someone who pays me well. I’d rather own a truck and be leased on to someone who has good contract freight that lets me run where I want. I also like being able to choose my schedule and when I go home and for how long I stay home. I have no desire to try and eek out a living from the load boards and I have no desire to run dedicated for a direct shipper. The second part goes back to me enjoying my time off and being dedicated doesn’t allow much for that.

My family had authority and I could’ve activated it back in 2012 if I wanted to. But to me it wasn’t worth it. So I’ll keep helping this 100 truck company grow into a monopoly I guess.

    what YOU want is irrelevant

what the truck makes money on is all that matters
